Pilots Rowing Team Open House and Regatta, Oct. 26

spencerFaculty, staff, and students are invited to join the UP rowing team family at their last home race, the Portland Fall Classic Regatta, on Sunday, October 26, from 8 a.m. to noon, at the Portland Boathouse (1515 SE Water Avenue). UP teams will be racing throughout the morning, so please come out to support the team, tour the boathouse the UP rowing team calls home, and meet other supporters of the Pilots. Coffee and refreshments will be available to all Pilot fans at our team tent.

Race Start Times:

  • 8:36 a.m: Varsity Eight start time
  • 8:38 a.m: 2nd Varsity Eight start time
  • 10:58 a.m: Varsity Four start time
  • 11:17 a.m: Novice Eight start time
  • 11:20 a.m: Novice Four start time

The crews will launch approximately 50-60 minutes before each race start time above. Come meet the UP athletes and coaches, watch the boats handled from the rack to the dock, and cheer the team from the shore as they race by. Health Center: Don’t Miss Out On Flu Vaccine!

hDid you miss out on receiving your flu vaccine? Join the health center staff on Friday to help keep our campus healthy this flu season. The health center will hold another flu clinic on Friday, October 24, in Christie Hall lobby, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. If you are unable to make the flu clinic you may also call the health center at 7134 and schedule a time to be vaccinated. Host Families Needed

japanEvery December a group of prospective students from St. Mary’s College in Nagoya, Japan visits the University of Portland campus and surrounding area. For many years the University has had a relationship with St. Mary’s College in which Japanese students study for two years at St. Mary’s College and transfer to UP to complete their bachelor’s degrees. This year, the international student services office is looking for two families that would like to host one female student during their visit. They will stay in Portland from December 20 to 27.

UP Virtual Learning Center

virtuallearningThe academic technology services office is pleased to announce the creation and launch of the UP Virtual Learning Center (VLC), created in response to the growing need for professional development for staff and faculty on the University of Portland campus. The initial offerings include mini courses on Moodle, Storytelling, and MediaSpace. New self-paced online courses will be launching each month in addition to Tech Tutorials, Webinars, and workshops. Learners can earn digital badges for participating in the VLC. Student Summer Research Symposium, Nov. 9

Orr copyThe first annual Summer Research Symposium will occur on Sunday, November 9, from 5 to 7 p.m., in Bauccio Commons. All are welcome to come see the amazing research opportunities many of our students had this past summer, both at UP and all across the nation and world. Register For Faculty Research Day, Jan. 8

goodiesMore than fifty University professors from across campus have committed to present their perspectives on a wide range of themes on Faculty Research Day, taking place on Thursday, January 8. Each panel has faculty from across disciplines and schools offering brief five-minute perspectives on the theme and then the discussion is open for new insights and potential collaboration. University president Rev. Mark Poorman, C.S.C., and Tom Greene, provost, will host lunch and a cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres to complete the day.

Professional Development Workshops, Lectures

staff & faculty portraitsAcademic technology services will offer new professional development opportunities this fall, according to Maria Erb, information services. A faculty speaker series, “Managing Technology in the Classroom,” will debut on Tuesday, October 28, from 3 to 4 p.m., in the Clark Library classroom with guest speaker Eric Anctil, education. His talk, “When Technology Invades the College Classroom and Threatens Everything,” will address the challenges of teaching with technology, not as a pedagogical tool, but as a tool for distraction and transportation to a new social environment. All are invited to attend.

Academic technology services will also present a curation workshop, in collaboration with the Clark Library, on Wednesday, November 5, from noon to 1 p.m., in the Clark Library classroom. Heidi Senior, library, will share best practices around finding pictures and music licensed for reuse or in the public domain to support the creation of multimedia projects. Participants are invited to bring their lunches. Snacks and beverages will be provided.

Please create a basic LinkedIn profile prior to attending a LinkedIn Lab and bring your resume and your laptop with you to the workshop. All LinkedIn Labs will take place in career services on the lower level of Orrico Hall. Upcoming LinkedIn labs will take place on:
