Dundon-Berchtold Hall Use & Opening

August 16, 2019

Dundon-Berchtold Hall is nearing completion, and the building will be open for use on Thursday, August 22, for Orientation, and then the start of classes on Monday, August 26. With the opening of the building there are serval new spaces in EMS that can be requested for your events and classes starting Wednesday, August 21.

  • 17 classrooms varying in size
  • 1 meeting room that accommodates 12 people

There are rooms that require additional approval to be requested for meetings or events:

  • Brian Doyle Lecture Hall – accommodates 150 people
  • Conference Room 102 – accommodates 14 people
  • Conference Room 202 – accommodates 12 people

These rooms require a member of the President’s Leadership Cabinet or a dean to request the room and to be present for the entire meeting or event. Requests for these rooms are to go through the president’s office. Contact Kathy Simek at x7101, or simek@up.edu.

New Faculty Orientation: Welcome Our New UP Profs

The University of Portland welcomes 27 new faculty members to The Bluff as they begin new faculty orientation on Monday, August 19. The two day long orientation will introduce new faculty to the University’s resources, traditions, and culture with sessions on teaching and learning, faith and formation, and service and leadership. Do You Know an Outstanding UP Alumnus?

Every year, the University of Portland recognizes alumni who embody the mission of UP in their life and work. As part of the Pilot community, you are invited to help us identify these alumni through the annual Alumni Awards.

Whether it’s a person who has shown great promise early in their career, someone who embodies the University’s mission of service and leadership, or an individual who has built a sustained record of accomplishment and community contribution throughout their lifetime, we’d like to celebrate them and share their inspiring stories.

Please submit stories and nominations by Tuesday, October 15 using this link. Honorees will be chosen this fall, and will be celebrated at the President’s Alumni Awards Gala during Alumni Reunion Weekend in June 2020. Learn about our outstanding 2019 winners, or view photos from this year’s Gala.

Memorial Mass for Fr. Claude Pomerleau, C.S.C.

August 16, 2019

A memorial Mass will be offered for the repose of the soul of Fr. Claude Pomerleau, C.S.C., on Thursday, September 5, at 5 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. All members of the UP and local community are welcome to join with the Holy Cross community and members of Fr. Claude’s family as we celebrate his blessed presence in our midst and offer our prayers for his eternal joy in God’s heavenly communion. A social in the Bauccio Commons Board Room will follow the memorial Mass.

Faith & Intellectual Life Discussions Group: Sept. 13

August 16, 2019

The first meeting of the Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group for the 2019-2020 academic year will be Friday, September 13, 3:30-5 p.m., in the Murphy Room in Franz Hall. We will be discussing “Is There a God?” by Stephen Hawking,  “What about God?” by Martin Rees, and the poem “If There Is No God” by Czeslaw Milosz. All readings are available on the Garaventa Center website. All faculty and staff are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

Fall 2019 Faculty/Staff Noon Hour Fitness Schedule

Keep active as we move into the next academic year with Beauchamp’s Fall 2019 Faculty/Staff noon-hour fitness classes. Classes are offered each weekday from 12:05 to 12:50 p.m. Our noon-hour faculty/staff members are a supportive, fun and friendly group. Classes start the first week of school.
  • Mondays – Kickboxing with Madison – Studio 20
  • Tuesdays – Sweaty 20 with Julee – Studio 30
  • Wednesdays – Centering Yoga with Karen – Studio 30
  • Thursdays – alternating Yin Yoga with Osel – Studio 30 (starts 8/29) and Rowing with Ryan – Studio 20 (starts 9/5)
  • Fridays – Zumba with Brady – Studio 45

Join The Pilot Mug Club!

The first 200 people to sign up for the Pilot Cash Plan through Bon Appetit will receive an exclusive Pilot Club Mug, according to Kirk Mustain, Bon Appetit. Members of this exclusive club can bring their Pilot Mug Club container to any of 4 Bon Appetit campus locations and fill it up with soda, tea, or brewed coffee, as much as they would like, for free.

The pilot cup is a limited time offer and Bon Appetit cannot replace lost mugs. Valid September 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020. Mug club dollars for a given club year must be used by the end of the membership plan dates. There are no refunds, transfers of mug club dollars or carry over opportunities.

Anita Gooding, social work, was selected as a 2020-2021 Field Research Scholar by the Transforming Field Education Landscape (TFEL) program at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Scholars attend regular seminars and present their own research related to strengthening field education in social work.

Aziz Inan, Shiley School of Engineering. recently shared some of his work on palindrome dates with the staff of Farmers’ Almanac which lead to an articled titled “2021: A Special Year For Palindrome Dates, Starting This Month!” See the article using this link.

Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.

Steven Kolmes, environmental studies, wrote an editorial on “Sustainability and the Role of Higher Education” in Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development, Vol. 62, , pp. 2-3. Amber Vermeesch, nursing, received an Opus Prize Foundation Grant Sabbatical Support, Opus Prize Foundation, $5,000, on November 12, 2020.
