Nominations for 2019 Alumni Awards Welcome: Deadline Extended

Do you know a Pilot who deserves to be recognized for his or her work? Through the annual Alumni Awards, the University of Portland recognizes those individuals who embody UP’s mission in their life and work, and demonstrate the power of the University to prepare people who respond to the needs of the world. All faculty and staff are invited to help identify those alumni who should be recognized for making outstanding contributions to their professional fields, for their dedication to volunteer endeavors, or for their ongoing support of the University and its mission. Nominations are due by October 15, using this form.

Campus Resource Fair, Aug. 16: Participants Welcome!

The Office of Residence Life will be hosting their annual Campus Resource Fair during resident assistant training on Thursday, August 16, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., on the Terrace Room patio. All campus partners are invited to participate. This is an opportunity to connect resident assistants (RAs) to as many campus partners as possible, who can share information on how they can support the RAs in programming efforts, and for RAs to assist in getting each campus department’s name and mission out to on-campus residents.

Free Performance of “SCARS,” August 15

Fr. Richard Berg, C.S.C., is happy to announce the performance of the new therapy version of his play, SCARS, on Wednesday, August 15, 7-9 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The performance is free and all are welcome.

Drama therapist Elliot Maxwell from Montreal will play the role of Eric.

SCARS is a play based on interviews with active duty military men. The goal of the program is to help family members and others better understand the veteran’s personal suffering and emotional scars, as well as the painful impact of post-traumatic stress on their relationships.

Fr. Gerry’s Going Away Party: All Welcome!

All UP community members are invited to bid Fr. Gerry Olinger, C.S.C., a fond farewell at a reception on Wednesday, August 8, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., in the Pilot House. A program will begin at 4:30 p.m., and refreshments, featuring a selection of summer beverages, will be provided.

Fr. Gerry has accepted the position of vice president for mission engagement and church affairs at the University of Notre Dame. He has served faithfully for the past nine years on The Bluff, engaging with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and constituents in his roles as vice president for student affairs, vice president for university relations, executive assistant to the president, and as pastoral resident in Schoenfeldt Hall.

New PilotsUP Portal Starts August 10

Web and enterprise services is excited to announce the rollout of the new PilotsUP portal beginning August 10. The new version of PilotsUP features a clean, mobile friendly design, enhanced search and navigation, and a configurable display for accessing your most frequently used web resources. Sites for the registrar, financial aid, the provost’s office, and other heavy traffic sites have been migrated to the new platform. “PilotsUP Classic” will still be available for August and September; if you’re not able to locate a resource in New PilotsUP, please let web and enterprise services know. From August 10 through 12, PilotsUP will be intermittently unavailable as we transition to the new version. Please contact Lisel Stancil with any questions: stancil@up.edu.

Have You Considered Becoming a Franz Center Leadership Fellow?

The Franz Center is providing free leadership training and development during the 2018-19 academic year for faculty and staff who want to learn more about becoming a Leadership Fellow. There have been over 100 faculty and staff from across the university who have been trained as Leadership Fellows and the Franz Center is seeking to include 40 additional faculty and staff who will begin their training next fall. After completing the leadership training, Leadership Fellows serve as leadership instructors and coaches in the Leader Certificate program and earn a stipend of up to $2,500 for their teaching or coaching. We are able to include only exempt (salaried) employees in this program at this time. Vermont Hills Now Enrolling For UP Childcare

Vermont Hills Family Life Centers, which administers the University’s child care facility, has slots available for children of faculty, staff, students, and the public. VHFLC is dedicated to enriching the lives of children through an emotionally and physically secure environment that promotes self-esteem through positive role models and a well-defined curriculum. Staff at VHFLC centers respect each child’s unique ability to experience fun, wonder and challenge, and prioritize the accommodation of every individual at his or her developmental stage. VHFLC not only supplies families with nurturing childcare and preschool, but provides education, development, and support through a variety of family services.

Hey, UP Parents! Need a Night Out?

August 3, 2018

University parents are invited to take the opportunity to enjoy four hours of free time with their significant others while the UP onsite daycare watches their children on Parents Night Out, Friday, August 10, from 6-10 p.m. This service is provided by Vermont Hills Family Life Center daycare/preschool. The cost is $40 for one child or $50 for two kids or more, and includes dinner for the little ones.

Parents Night Out typically takes place during the academic year on the first Friday of each month, and is not limited to children already enrolled in UP daycare. For more information or to sign your kids up, contact Desiree Moan, director, at 503-283-9688 or desireem@vhflc.com.
