Please Check “Back to The Bluff” Website for Latest on Campus Re-Entry

July 31, 2020

All University of Portland faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to check regularly for updates on the Back to The Bluff webpage using this link, according to Michael Lewellen, VP for marketing and communications. New content is being added weekly as the University’s August 17 reopening date nears.

This page will continue to serve as the primary source of information that prepares the University community for campus re-entry as we approach the fall 2020 semester. Fall semester will include a blend of in-person classes and remote instruction, as well as a variety of campus life experiences that meet safety guidelines set forth by the State of Oregon. Please return to this page often! Many of our protocols are still in development, and our plans are subject to change as our understanding of COVID-19 evolves.

Academic technology services & innovation will be offering a weekly series of “Wednesday Webinars” and “Moodle Mondays” to support faculty who are preparing for hybrid and online instruction this fall. UP faculty can find all session times, details, and RSVP forms on the Hybrid & Online Basecamp Moodle page.

New Icon of African Martyrs in Shipstad Chapel

July 24, 2020

Campus Ministry director Fr. Jim Gallagher, C.S.C., has announced the newly arrived Icon of the Uganda Martyrs.  Commissioned in January for the Shipstad Hall Chapel, which is dedicated to the Uganda Martyrs, the icon shows the 22 martyrs flanking Jesus Christ. These members of the king’s court were put to death between 1885-1887 for refusing to forsake their faith. The icon was created by local Portland artist Mary Katsilometes, and will be displayed in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher until August 7 when it will be installed in the Chapel in Shipsad Hall, which was dedicated to the Uganda Martyrs as a way to connect our local community to the Holy Cross priests, brothers, sisters, and lay collaborators active in East Africa.

For more information contact Fr. Gallagher at gallaghe@up.edu.
