Nanotechnology Talk, Workshop, June 18

June 8, 2015

faltensThe Shiley School of Engineering is sponsoring a talk by Purdue University professor Tanya Faltens (“nanoHUB.org: an Open Access Science and Engineering Gateway for Research and Education in Nanotechnology and Related Fields”), on the National Science Foundation’s nanoHUB technology platform, on Thursday, June 18, from noon to 1 p.m., in Franz Hall room 212. Her talk is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public, especially those who have an interest in nanotechnology.

Faltens is the educational content creation manager for the Network for Computational Nanotechnology (NCN), which created the open access nanoHUB.org cyberplatform. Her presentation will provide an overview of nanoHUB’s online resources, and give examples of their use for the study of nanoscale science and engineering.

Currently the world’s largest virtual nanotechnology user facility, with over 330,000 users, nanoHUB was established in 2002 with the mission of supporting the National Nanotechnology Initiative through its innovative platform for sharing research and educational resources with a diverse user community.

After an introduction to nanoHUB, a hands-on workshop and open discussion will be held, and those who plan to attend are encouraged to bring a laptop computer with internet access to explore nanoHUB. Creating a free nanoHUB account in advance and installing the latest version of Java will expedite the process of running simulation tools.

For more information contact Peter Osterberg, engineering, at 7416 or oster@up.edu.

New Nursing Scholarship Honors Catherine Bigelow Gullickson ’82

June 1, 2015

gullickson copyThe University has established the Catherine Bigelow Gullickson Memorial Scholarship to honor a 1982 alumna who touched the lives of many during her career as a nurse. Catherine Gullickson passed away in November 2014 after an 11-year battle with breast cancer. To date, over 120 of Catherine’s friends, classmates, and family members have contributed $106,000 to the scholarship. Husband Jeff Gullickson and family have set a goal to match donations and grow the endowment to fund multiple student nurses in perpetuity.

Gullickson was a four-year tennis player at UP and graduated magna cum laude. She started her career working the graveyard shift in a nursing home, then moved to a hospital where she worked in multiple departments, ultimately finding her calling in the emergency room.

For more information about the scholarship, contact Colin McGinty, development, at 8005 or mcginty@up.edu.

Campus Changes: Praying Hands Memorial Trees

June 1, 2015

Kane Praying HandsThe physical plant grounds crew has been working this past week to remove five trees near the Praying Hands Memorial, after it was deemed too risky to allow them to remain in place. The trees were dead or dying due to leakage from a major (and aging) underground steam line, according to longtime UP arborist Jim Wells. For the past 67 years, since the memorial was built through the efforts of UP students to commemorate classmates who served and died in World War II, the area around the Praying Hands has slowly filled in with evergreen and magnolia trees, plus shrubbery and perennial flowers, providing a quiet, sheltered spot to remember those members of the UP community who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces. Senior grounds manager Nathan Hale is working on a new landscape design; however, replanting plans have not been finalized, so for the time being the Praying Hands Memorial will revert to its open setting, much as it looked originally in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
