Come Wish Barbara Well, April 30

bhughes copyMail center specialist Barbara Hughes will retire on Thursday, April 30, after 14 years with the University. A farewell gathering is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on that Thursday in the mailing and printing services office in Tyson Hall. Please stop by to wish Barbara well in her new endeavors and thank her for her expert, cheerful service and devotion.

Whisper Week in the Clark Library

Whisper-Week-UpBeat_SpringPlease help library staff keep things to a whisper as students prepare for exams. In response to student feedback, all floors of the library are for quiet study through April 30. After exams, the library will close at 5 p.m. on May 1 and will also be closed on Sunday, May 3. 2015 Retiring Faculty Slideshow

A slideshow of the honored retirees can be found at this link. To complement the WordPress post, the museum also has a photograph display of the retiring faculty in the display case on the first floor of Buckley Center across from the Shepard Freshman Resources Center.

Summer Course Reserves

booksClark Library staff are ready to receive course reserve materials for the upcoming summer sessions. Please fill out the online Course Reserves form or e-mail a list of citations to library@up.edu. Faculty who plan to use materials that were on reserve in the past year can let staff know and they will find that previous list. Library staff handle scanning and copyright permissions, so be sure to include the course name, course number, instructor, and number of students enrolled in each section.

Early Christianity Scholars Meet On UP Campus

Staff and faculty portraitsOn Saturday, April 18, eleven scholars from Portland, Eugene, Tacoma, and surrounding areas met on the UP campus for the second annual meeting of the Northwest Early Christian Studies Seminar, according to Michael Cameron, theology. Early Christian Studies deals with the history, culture, thought, and practice of Christianity from about 100-800 C.E. The group heard papers by leading scholars from the University of Oregon, Pacific Lutheran University, and the University of Portland. The group, grateful for UP’s springtime beauty and hospitality, asked to return for its third meeting in April 2016.

Parents Night Out, May 1

ollieBLAHUniversity parents are invited to take the opportunity to enjoy four hours of free time with their significant others while the UP onsite daycare watches their children on Parents Night Out, Friday, May 1, from 6-10 p.m. This service is provided by Vermont Hills Family Life Center daycare/preschool. The cost is $30 per child or $45 per family and includes dinner for the kiddies. All UP faculty and staff are welcome to take advantage of this service. Proceeds benefit the UP daycare/preschool house.

Dave Houglum, Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, completed a six-year commitment on the Board of Directors for the Maybelle Center for Community, with two of those years serving as the Executive Board Secretary. Founded by Fr. Richard Berg, C.S.C. (former Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at University of Portland from 1978-1991), the Maybelle Center disrupts social isolation so we can all experience a healthy, connected life and contribute to a thriving Portland.

Aziz Inan, Shiley School of Engineering, published the article titled, “Numerical curiosities for Bob Moore’s 92nd birthday,” in Clackamas Review, Pamplin Media Group, Portland, Oregon, February 16, 2021.

Simon Aihiokhai, theology, was a manuscript reviewer for Springer’s Journal: SN Social Sciences.

Barbara Braband, Amber Vermeesch, Corey Pressman, nursing, published “Piloting the perfect Storm: A vision for the vital practitioner.” Journal of Nursing Education (accepted/in press).
