Beacon Amasses Awards, Internships, Says Goodbye to Print

April 22, 2016

Beacon New York 20116.JPGThe Beacon has won four regional Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and advances to the national competition in the following categories: General News Reporting, In-Depth Reporting, Online Sports Reporting, and Photo Illustration. The regional competition involved student media from universities in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska with enrollment under 10,000. National winners will be announced at the SPJ convention in New Orleans in September.

Also, the College Media Association awarded the Beacon Second Place in the Apple Awards for Best Newspaper from schools with fewer than 5000 students. First Place went to Rice University’s student newspaper.

Additionally, several Beacon staffers have landed selective media internships this summer. Malika Andrews will intern at the Denver Post as part of the elite Sports Journalism Institute. The Charles Snowden Program for Excellence in Journalism has awarded paid internships to Clare Duffy (the Bend Bulletin) and Cheyenne Schoen (Klamath Falls Herald and News). Ben Arthur will intern for the sports department of KOIN-TV (CBS).

The Beacon just published its final print edition and is preparing to go all-digital in the 2016-17 academic year with a new, fast-loading website and improved mobile app. Stay tuned!

ReadUP Selection for 2016-2017: “All the Light We Cannot See”

April 22, 2016

allthelightAs professors plan content for fall and spring courses, it may be helpful to note that the Read UP selection next year will be Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning All the Light We Cannot See, according to Karen Eifler, Garaventa Center. Students and the entire UP community will have access to the book and several discussion groups will take place in residence halls and the Clark Library. The author will be on campus for a free public lecture on Monday, February 27, as a guest of the Schoenfeldt Series.

This book may tie in well for courses addressing World War Two, ethical formation, pacifism, fascism, and more. Plus it’s just a great, vibrant tale.

For more information on Read UP, contact Eifler at eifler@up.edu.

UP Bioethics Bowl Team Competes at National Level

April 22, 2016

Staff and faculty portraits

The University’s inaugural Bioethics Bowl Team traveled recently to an intercollegiate competition, the National Bioethics Bowl, on April 8-10, at Case Western Reserve University. The team is a first step in extending an initiative of College of Arts and Sciences dean Michael Andrews in his role as McNerney-Hanson Endowed Chair in Ethics. In recent past years, the University held intramural ethics bowl events, but did not compete in intercollegiate competition.

Team members are Megan Berg, biology/ Spanish; Madeleine Boyle, philosophy/math; Emma Brooks, nursing; Savannah Collas, biology; Lucas Gushikuma, nursing; and Elisa Reverman, biology/chemistry/philosophy. Patricia McShane, philosophy, is coach of the team. Drawing on previous experience coaching successful teams at Georgetown (where she founded their Ethics Bowl program), she worked extensively with the students  to help them understand how to discuss the cases at the competition.

The UP team was the only one to go undefeated in the preliminary rounds, defeating University of Maryland Baltimore County, Ripon College, and San Jose State University, but fell to Macalaster College in the quarterfinals. Students debated a wide array of bioethical issues, including the ethics state-sponsored newborn bloodspot biobanks, medical deportation, neuroenhancement, postmortem genetic testing, and more. This year’s efforts and team travel were sponsored by the McNerney-Hanson Endowed Chair in Ethics, the Department of Philosophy, and the School of Nursing.

For more information contact Paddy McShane, philosophy, at 7282 or mcshanep@up.edu.
