Spring Encounter With Christ Retreat: Palanca, Please

March 15, 2019

Over the weekend of March 29-31, a group of UP students and student leaders will be on the Encounter with Christ (EWC) Retreat. Would you consider writing a note (palanca) to the students you know on the list? This is an opportunity to encourage students and express appreciation for them outside the classroom. Each retreatant will receive an envelope of surprise palanca. Please do not discuss this concept with students, to keep it a surprise.

A list of those going on the retreat, along with their majors, can be found at this link. Please submit your palanca to the Campus Ministry office in St. Mary’s. Mark your envelope with “EWC Retreat—(student’s name)” and bring it by Wednesday, March 27.

Please send any questions to Veronicca Bathon at bathon@up.edu or x7889). Thank you for your assistance.

Share Your Ideas: New Digital Photo Gallery

March 15, 2019

Marketing and communications is developing a new web application, named ShareUP, which will allow faculty and staff to easily find and download curated images. But we need your input in making sure that we are designing the application in the most user-friendly way.

Please join the marketing team on Thursday, March 28, from 11:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., in the Library Conference Room. Marketing team members will present a similar digital gallery and walk through its capabilities. Please join us so we can understand what works…and what doesn’t.

To make sure there is room for everyone, please email Chris Long at longc@up.edu to RSVP. Chris can also at that time give you access to the test site for you to review ahead of time.

New TLC Blog Entries: “Core Matters, Parts 3 & 4”

March 15, 2019

As part of an ongoing series of short essays on the Teaching & Learning Community Blog, two new pieces are ready to satisfy your core curriculum curiosity. Steve Mayer, chemistry, writes about the many ways chemistry classes contribute to the broader goals of a liberal arts education (while also fulfilling those pesky science requirements), and Heather Carpenter, environmental studies, writes about ways in which classes such as “Science of the Sustainable Gourmet” do the same.

If you have any questions about the series or want to make a contribution, feel free to contact Andrew Guest, psychological sciences, or Lars Larsen, English.

TLC From The TLC: Growth Mindset & Universal Design

March 15, 2019

Did you know that the majority of students with accessible education services (AES) accommodations have either a learning disability (LD), or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or both LD and ADHD? These two articles discuss the benefits of utilizing a growth mindset approach when teaching students who experience ADHD and LD. The surprise? These same growth mindset and universal design strategies also benefit learning outcomes for students without disabilities.

The Creativity of ADHD:  More insights on a positive side of a “disorder”, by Holly White in Scientific American. (Read this article in 5 minutes.)

There is a Better Way to Teach Students with Learning Disabilities, by Jo Boaler and Tanya Lamar in Time Magazine. (Read this article in 4 minutes.)

Are you interested in an introduction to Carol Dweck’s work on growth mindsets in learners? Check out her TED talk (10-minute video).  If you are looking for efficient strategies to incorporate in your course to support growth mindset, check out: A Growth Mindset About Mistakes: Support students in identifying a mistake and developing skills to learn from that mistake. (Read this article in 3 minutes.)

Would you like to incorporate growth mindset and universal design principles into your courses, or have general questions? Please email Melanie Gangle, AES program manager, at gangle@up.edu.

Happy 91st Birthday, Dr. Arthur Schulte, Jr.

March 15, 2019

Friday, March 15, 2019 was the 91st birthday of Arthur Albert “Art” Schulte, Jr., who served the University of Portland exceptionally for 45 years. Schulte arrived on The Bluff in 1958 as an accounting professor. Later, he served as the dean of the business school and graduate school, executive and financial vice president, special assistant to the president, and twice as acting president. Schulte retired from University of Portland in 2003. Among his many contributions, Schulte is remembered for his distinctive role in transitioning University of Portland from a financial crisis in 1971 to a fiscally stable institution in 1975. He passed away last year on September 24, 2018, at the age of 90.

In appreciation for Schulte’s extraordinary leadership and service, Shiley School of Engineering professor Aziz Inan constructed a collection of arithmetical birthday trivia in his honor. See the full collection here.
