Retiring Faculty Ceremony & Reception, April 25

Flexible Spending Account Grace Period

please_note feb 24All current FSA Plan participants had through March 15, 2014 to complete eligible transactions for the 2013 plan year. Participants now have until March 31, 2014 to file all claims for reimbursement with Flex Plan. There will be no 2013 funds available beyond this grace period.

Beginning with the 2014 plan year, all savings under the plan must be used by December 31, 2014, with the exception of up to $500, which can be rolled into the 2015 plan year and used throughout 2015.

Questions regarding the plan years, grace periods, and carryovers may be directed to Andy Sherwood at 8981 or sherwood@up.edu.

Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group, April 4

orange red red rothko.jpgThe next meeting of the Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group will be on Friday, April 4, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., in Franz Hall Murphy conference room. The group will be discussing Antonio Spadaro’s “Interview with Pope Frances: A Big Heart Open to God” and the Rothko paining “Orange Red Orange,” which accompanies this announcement.

Father Thomas C. Oddo, C.S.C. Memorial Scholarship

oddoTomShortly after his untimely death in 1989, Univer­sity of Portland president Rev. Thomas C. Oddo, C.S.C., was memorialized by faculty, staff, students, and friends with the establishment of an endowed scholarship fund named after him. Every year the University awards scholarship funds in Fr. Oddo’s name to one or two students who meet a set of criteria which includes demonstrated commitment to service and to service learning.

Hawaii Club Luau, March 22

luauAll are welcome to enjoy an evening of Aloha spirit and hospitality at the 38th annual Hawaii Club Luau on Saturday, March 22, in the Chiles Center. “A Piece of Paradise” will feature food, dance and culture of the Hawaiian Islands with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.; dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Tickets are available to students, faculty, staff, and alumni for $10 per person, while general admission tickets are on sale for $20 per person. Laurie Kelley Appointed VP For University Relations

Laurie_C_Kelley copyLaurie Kelley has been appointed as vice president for University relations, according to University president Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C. Kelley has been serving in that role in an interim capacity since October 2013, overseeing the Offices of Alumni Relations, Develop­ment, Marketing and Communications, and University Events. She has served on The Bluff since October 2006, leading marketing and communications office and mailing and printing services.

In addition to marketing, Kelley has directed many of the University’s signature events, including Focus the Nation, the Rise Campaign launch, the State of UP, the Pamplin School of Business’ 75th Anni­versary, the School of Nursing’s 75th Anniversary, and the Rise for Scholarships Event, which raised over $1.3 million for scholarships. Prior to coming to UP, she was vice president of marketing and planning at Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB). Kelley has served on the boards of directors of the Blanchet House and the Children’s Cancer Association, and served as a national commissioner for CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education). She currently serves on the board of Jesuit High School and on the council for Notre Dame Women Connect. As all who meet her soon learn, Laurie and her husband Mike have four children.

Audigy Group has grown from a startup in 2004 to managing more than 650 locations and 1,700 full-time employees with $250M in aggregate revenue today. At the time the corporation went public, he was the youngest CEO to list his company and ring the opening bell of the American Stock Exchange. Student Kevin Bastien Accepted for National Fellowship

bastienKevin Bastien, a junior computer science major and Entrepreneur Scholar, has been accepted to the prestigious NCIIA/Epicenter Engineering University Innovation Fellows program, according to Peter Rachor, Franz Center. His application was supported by Rachor, Tammy Vandegrift, Sharon Jones, and Robin Anderson.

Bastien’s fellowship is seen as an opportunity for UP to have a member of this national group on campus in support of entrepreneurship and innovation initiatives within the Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation. It will also support increased focus on entrepreneurship, leadership, and innovation within the Pamplin School of Business, the Shiley School of Engineering, and campus-wide.

The University Innovation Fellows program is run by the National Center for Engineering Pathways to Innovation (Epicenter), a National Science Foundation-funded partnership between Stanford University and the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA). Music At Midweek, March 5

U of PMusic at Midweek performers for Wednesday, March 5 are sopranos Rebecca Wascoe from Texas Tech University and Nicole Leupp Hanig, performing and fine arts (pictured). They will be joined by pianist Richard Bower. Their free performance begins at 12:30 p.m. in Mago Hunt Center recital hall. Joe Gallegos Lecture on Social Justice and Leadership, March 6

Anita Gooding, social work, was selected as a 2020-2021 Field Research Scholar by the Transforming Field Education Landscape (TFEL) program at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.
