President’s Day Mail, Feb. 16

Mount_Rushmore copy copyPresident’s day is celebrated this year on Monday, February 16, which means no incoming mail delivery, according to Mary Scroggins, mailing services. Outgoing mail must be received in the mail center by 2:30 p.m. to be taken to the downtown post office.

MAT Informational, Feb. 17

Photo: © 2008 Andrew M. DaddioFaculty, staff, and students are invited to a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Informational on Tuesday, February 17, at 6 p.m., in Franz Hall Murphy Room (room 426). The MAT is an intensive program designed to prepare individuals with baccalaureate degrees for teaching in K-12 schools. MAT graduates earn a masters degree and are eligible for Oregon initial licensure at two contiguous levels of authorization: early childhood, elementary, middle and/or high school.

Residence Life Moving To Tyson Hall, Feb. 19-20

hThe Office of Residence Life is moving to Tyson Hall room 123 and will be closed on Thursday, February 19, and Friday, February 20. Residence life will reopen at its new location on Monday, February 23. The entrance to the new location in Tyson Hall 123 is on N. Warren Street, facing Schoenfeldt Hall, near the center stairwell of Tyson Hall. Please contact residence life at 7205 or reslife@up.edu with any questions.

African American Read-In, Feb. 19

anjelou copyIn celebration of Black History Month, the University is hosting its annual African American Read-In and free cultural dinner on Thursday, February 19, at 5:30 p.m., in the Terrace Room. The African American Read-In is a national dedication to literary guests sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Multicultural programs, student activities, and the English department invite all students, faculty, and staff to share in the celebration dinner and reading. Participants are encouraged to read a selection from their favorite African American author, poet, playwright, songwriter, or individual work. All are welcome to attend even if they choose not to read.

Annual UP Reading Fair, Feb. 22

Reading Fair at the Univeristy of Portland's Chiles CenterThe University will host the 21st annual Reading Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, in the Chiles Center. The event, “Blast Off Into Reading,” is free and open to all members of the UP community and the public. The event will be hosted by Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education. Every child attending will receive a free, new book of their choosing.

The fair’s theme is designed to be an integrated approach to literacy that will engage students from pre-kindergarten to middle school. The featured author this year is Raymond Macalino, who will read from his book, Percy’s Planetary Surprise. Kid-friendly events throughout the day will include outer space-related crafts, an obstacle course, and a raffle.

It’s Tamale Time! Support Border Immersion Trip

TamalesThe Moreau Center will offer a tamale sale in support of the Border Immersion Trip on Tuesday, February 17 and Wednesday, February 18. Vegeta­rian and chicken tamales will be sold at $2 each and $20 a dozen in the Bauccio Commons between 11:20 a.m. and 12:45 p.m., and 5 to 7 p.m. on both days. WordPress Wednesdays Start Feb. 18

wordpress-logo copyAcademic technology services will offer a new weekly lab to to help UP community members work on their WordPress sites. Starting Wednesday, Feb 18, come by the information services training lab in Franz Hall room 010 to get help with websites or blogs. Technicians will cover posts, pages, menus, widgets, headers, themes, and anything else needed to manage UP-hosted WordPress sites. On request specific topics (such as particular themes or plugins) can be covered in detail. Drop-ins are welcome but please register, as seating is limited and priority will go to registered attendees.

To register visit the Virtual Learning Center at vlc.up.edu and login with UP username and password. Click “Workshops” on the navigation menu, and find the next upcoming WordPress Wednesday lab and click “Register.”

Juniors Set to Host Parents, Feb. 20-22

koffler copyThe Office of Student Activities and the student planning committee are gearing up for the 18th Annual Junior Parents and Families Weekend, taking place on campus from February 20 to 22, according to Jeromy Koffler, student activities. Between 225 and 250 families are expected to participate, with approximately 750 overall attendees this year. Please join the junior class and student activities in welcoming our guests when they arrive.

American Cancer Society Relay For Life, March 20-21

relayThe UP chapter of Colleges Against Cancer will hold its annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life on Friday, March 20 and Saturday, March 21, from 6 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday, at the Chiles Center. All UP community members are encouraged to join teams or form their own for this event. The Relay For Life program will honor cancer survivors and caregivers and feature the society’s mission to save lives from cancer. The funds raised at Relay support patient services, lifesaving research, prevention education, and advocacy efforts.

Relay For Life is a community event where teams and individuals camp out at a school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team has at least one participant on the track at all times and participates in fundraising that supports the American Cancer Society’s mission. Four million people participated in more than 6,000 events worldwide in 2014. Last year, 500 people participated in Relay For Life of University of Portland and raised $39,000.
