Engineering Project Pitch Nights
In February the Shiley School of Engineering will be conducting its annual project pitch nights for senior design projects, according to Andrew Nuxoll, engineering. This is an opportunity for faulty and staff members to recruit a team of soon-to-be-professional engineers to construct a mechanical, electrical, and/or software prototype to their specifications.
Past projects for UP faculty and staff include a custom colored light projector for research in field analysis for Kevin Cantrell, chemistry; an Android app for Pilots fans requested by the athletics office; and a temperature controlled sample container for Steven Mayer, chemistry. Projects that are selected this semester will begin production in August and be completed in April 2016. Faculty and staff who have a pitch they would like to make can contact Nuxoll nuxoll@up.edu.
Scheduling Library Sessions for Spring Courses
Welcome back from Christmas break. As faculty prepare for spring semester, now is a great time to schedule library instruction for the best choice of dates and times. Librarians will work with faculty to tailor sessions to the students’ research needs. Classes typically meet in the Clark Library’s classroom on the upper floor. Laptops are available for students to use, or they can use their own wireless enabled devices. To schedule instruction, contact Stephanie Michel, library, at 7418 or michel@up.edu.
Single Sign On Available Now For The Library
Tired of signing in over and over for the library’s various online services? Then we have good news for you in the New Year. All of the library’s services requiring a UP network account have been added to the University’s single sign-on solution: Go! This is already in place for other frequently used University applications, such as PilotsUP, Moodle, and Outlook Webmail.
Now Go! includes course reserves, UP ILLiad, off campus access to databases, access to eBooks, Pilot Scholars, and your library account. When you are signed in through http://go.up.edu, it automatically populates the login information and passes you through to these services within a few seconds. It’s easy to activate on all devices. Visit https://wordpress.up.edu/go/ for more instructions.

Our Latest Campus Visitors
Viruses have arrived on the UP campus along with returning faculty, staff, and students, according to Susan Chisum, health center. Unlike with other guests, it’s best to keep viruses at bay to have a happy, healthy New Year. While walking to class or the office you hear the dreaded cough and sneeze—that means the rhinovirus or cold virus is here. The flu virus is also spread that way, so please cover your cough or sneeze. An innocent gesture like sharing a drink with a friend can expose students to Mono or any number of contagious viruses. Sharing a bite of pizza or other food can lead to the dreaded Norovirus (nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea). The following tips may seem obvious, but in the long run following these steps will help us all have a better chance for a healthy winter and spring on The Bluff:
- Hand-washing is key—wash your hands often with soap and warm water, especially before meals, after using the restroom, coughing or sneezing. Alcohol hand sanitizers are effective when soap and water are not available.
- Limit physical contact—this is the optimal way to prevent viruses from spreading. Stay home if you are sick. Don’t risk spreading your illness to others. You should stay home for at least 24 hours after any fever is gone.
If you feel the odds are against you, practicing prevention now will help reduce your risk of illness. If you have not had a flu shot, make an appointment at the health center today. If you’ve heard that the match between the flu vaccine and some of the flu strains are not perfect, that is correct. However, the CDC is still recommending the flu vaccine as it protects you from three different strains of flu.
If you do catch the flu, you may have a high fever and be ill for a week or longer. The health center supports the CDC recommendation for flu prevention: get vaccinated! Please visit the health center website for suggestions on managing symptoms if you become ill.
