The Digital Lab coordinator provides assistance with creating assignments and instructs classes that have multimedia projects such as creating videos, digital posters, digital photography, and websites.

University of Portland Ranked Tops in Oregon by Kiplinger’s for 2018

January 5, 2018

According to Kiplinger’s Best College Values 2018, the University of Portland is the top ranked private university in Oregon for offering the best value for students based on academic quality, cost, and financial aid measures. The University was ranked 54th, rising four spots in the rankings, among all private universities nationwide. The University of Portland has been the top ranked private Oregon university for the past eight years, and has been ranked in the top 100 since Kiplinger’s began releasing its rankings of “Best Value Colleges.”

Kiplinger’s starts with data on nearly 1,200 public and private four-year schools, then narrows the list based on measures of academic quality. The quality criteria include admission rate (the percentage of applicants offered admission) and yield (the percentage of students who enroll out of those admitted), the four-year graduation rate, freshman retention rate, and student-to-faculty ratio.  Schools are then ranked on cost and financial aid measures, including the average student debt upon graduation and the median earnings of workers who started at a particular college 10 years earlier and who received federal financial aid. Quality criteria account for 55% of total points, and cost criteria account for 45%.

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance offers advice on managing money and achieving financial security, paying for college, and major purchases like automobiles and homes. The magazine has been published since 1947.

The complete rankings are available online at kiplinger.com/links/college.

Brother Fulgence Dougherty, C.S.C., 1922-2017

January 5, 2018

Brother Fulgence (James) Dougherty, C.S.C., former director of international student services at the University of Portland, passed away at age 95 on Sunday, December 17, 2017, after a lengthy illness. Br. Fulgence spent 32 years at the University of Portland. From August 1978 to May 1992, he served as the director of the international student services program. With extensive cross-cultural experience from 30 years spent in East Pakistan, Bangladesh, Liberia, and Ghana, he was eminently qualified to assist foreign students in the transition to life and education in the United States. He was well-known for his tireless attention to a large number of students, many of them from the Middle East, as well as for his outreach to faculty and staff. After he left the program in May 1992, Br. Fulgence continued to serve at the University until 2009 as an assistant to the academic vice president, where he evaluated foreign transcripts. In 1988, he was awarded the University’s highest award for staff employees, the Rev. Charles Miltner, C.S.C. Administrative Award, presented to employees who have been of exemplary and outstanding service to the University.

Upon his retirement from the University, Br. Fulgence continued to live in Holy Cross Court for another year before moving to Columba Hall, Notre Dame, Indiana, in 2010. Because of increasing health care needs, Br. Fulgence moved to Dujarie House in 2016, where he passed away on December 17.

Please keep Br. Fulgence and his family and Holy Cross community in your thoughts and prayers.
