Campus Services
New Internship & Engagement Manager in Career Services
Amanda Wheaton, who currently serves as academic internship coordinator in the career services office, has been promoted to the position of internship and engagement manager beginning July 2014. Wheaton started at UP in September 2012. In that time she has benchmarked best practices, partnered with faculty, created comprehensive internship resources for students, faculty, and employers, and developed an internship for credit manual for the College of Arts and Sciences.
As internship and engagement manager she will work with key constituencies (employers, alumni, board members, faculty, staff, and administrators) toward supporting a comprehensive internship program for all students. She will manage all internal and external components for internships on campus, including creating a campus-wide education program on experiential education, coordinating promotional materials, and coordinating employer outreach to develop new internship opportunities.
For more information contact Amy Cavanaugh, career services, at 7749 or cavanaug@up.edu.

New Museum Post: Upsilon Omega Pi Hearse
The latest post for the University Museum blog was written by Doug Edwards, class of 1967, and a member of Upsilon Omega Pi spirit fraternity. As he writes in his article, some of the Upsilon members were asking what happened to their Upsilon Omega Pi hearse, a well-known fixture on campus in the late 1950s and 1960s. Doug set out to find the answer and prepared a timeline of events with recollections from his fellow Upsilon brothers. With Doug’s permission, the University Archives and Museum posted his story of the Upsilon Hearse with photographs at http://tinyurl.com/lc5gbb6. Upsilon Omega Pi members and their families will be meeting at the 2014 all-alumni reunion for a social in the afternoon of Saturday, June 28.

Fr. Beauchamp Named President Emeritus
University president Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C., has been honored with a resolution appointing him as President Emeritus for the University of Portland. The resolution was read by president-elect Rev. Mark L. Poorman, soon to be the University’s 20th president, during a farewell gathering for Fr. Bill in Bauccio Commons on Wednesday, June 11.
Beauchamp Center Construction Underway
Construction on the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center started on May 19 with removal of the sod and retaining wall, according to Paul Luty, director of facilities planning and construction. Job trailers were set up and fencing put in place to keep curious onlookers at a safe distance. Site excavation commenced next, with all soil removed from the site being trucked down to the River Campus to be reused for future soccer and track facilities. The oak trees and the old public safety house came down next, with the help of Fr. Mark Poorman and Jim Ravelli (pictured before their turn at the controls of the excavator). All the concrete from the old site was hauled down to the River Campus to be ground up for use elsewhere. Next the workers excavated the two lower recreation courts and started digging and setting four new stormwater drywells. The first footings for the new building will be dug and formed this week, with a concrete pour scheduled the week of June 23. The oak tree trunks will be milled to be used in the new recreation building and/or the Cove project.

The priest’s dining room in the Bauccio Commons will closed for installation of windows starting Tuesday, June 17. The project should take eight to ten days. Staff and faculty can eat in the Bauccio Commons main dining room choosing from regular café choices until completion of the project. Please call Bon Appetit at 7330 if you have any questions.
Aaaaaaargh!
Faculty, staff, and students are reminded that the bluff area on campus is perhaps the world’s most efficient breeding ground for poison oak, an innocent-looking plant that causes intense itching, swelling, and oozing blisters on the skin of those unfortunate enough to brush against it, or to pet a dog which has recently rolled in a big juicy patch, or any number of surreptitious poison-oak-delivery systems. The resulting misery will not soon be forgotten.
The best way to avoid poison oak is to stay away from the sloping sides of the campus bluff altogether. If your job makes it necessary to climb down the bluff, it would be best to learn to identify the plant (“leaves of three, leave it be”), which typically has shiny green leaves and white berries— but not always. For more information, contact campus horticultural whiz Jim Haines, physical plant, at 7306 or haines@up.edu.
