Founders’ Day Celebration, April 8
The University’s annual Founders’ Day celebration will take place on Tuesday, April 8. Four sessions of student presentations will be held in place of regularly scheduled classes, and all students and faculty are encouraged take part in the day’s events, featuring senior presentations, undergraduate research, panel discussions, recitals, and more. Classes scheduled to begin after 4 p.m. will be held as usual.

Speech & Debate Union Results
The University of Portland’s Speech and Debate Union competed last weekend at the Fred Scheller Memorial Speech and Debate Tournament at Pacific University, according to Brian Simmons, communication studies. Congratulations are due to the following students on their impressive accomplishments at that speech and debate tournament:
Patrick Dolan (FR, biochemistry) finished in the top 10 and earned the 7th Best Speaker overall in the Novice division.
Lakshmi Diener (FR, communication studies) finished in the top 10 and earned the 1st Best Speaker overall in the Novice division.
Chelsea Roberts (JR, communication studies) finished in the top 15 and earned the 11th Best Speaker overall in the Junior division.
John Russell (SR, civil engineering) finished in the top 4 and earned the 10th best Speaker overall in the Open division).

Music At Midweek, Feb. 5
Patrick Murphy, performing and fine arts, will discuss his recent trip to Moscow during this week’s Music at Midweek, on Wednesday, February 5, at 12:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center recital hall. The event is free and open to all. Murphy will focus on the trials and tribulations he faced in attempting to obtain musical materials from the Soviet era, despite the opinion of other researchers that “it simply can’t be done.” From stories of being held at gunpoint to photos of Lenin’s tomb, all are welcome to look and listen into one of the world’s greatest musical enigmas.
David De Lyser, performing and fine arts, will also present “Hosanna Filio David: The compositional process from concept to performance” (or, “How to compose a work that includes your own name”). De Lyser will discuss his process of fulfilling a commission for an original choral work written for and premiered by the Palm Sunday Chorus of Central Wisconsin. Free Screening: “Walking the Camino,” Jan. 29
All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend a free screening of the documentary “Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago” on Wednesday, January 29, at 7 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons. The screening is open to the public. This multiple award winning film has been selling out screenings around the world. It concerns six strangers as they attempt to walk 500 miles across Spain, using the famous pilgrim path. The movie will be followed by a panel discussion with Kate Regan, international languages and cultures, and director and producer Lydia B. Smith. Emergency Response Training: Are You Ready for a Disaster?
The University of Portland Campus Community Emergency Response Team (CCERT) offers emergency response training for all faculty, staff, and students, according to Jeff Rook, public safety. Volunteers are trained by the University’s CCERT trainers and Portland Fire and Rescue to provide emergency disaster assistance on campus and in the immediate surrounding neighborhood. Public safety offers CCERT classes at no cost to people who live or work at the University of Portland. Participants attend a total of 24 hours of hands-on training. CISGO Seed Grant Recipients
The Collaborative for International Studies and Global Outreach (CISGO) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2013-2014 CISGO Seed Grants, according to Kate Regan, international languages and cultures. The grants are for projects related to increasing international issues and learning on campus, and support faculty, staff, and student projects that increase international awareness and inter-cultural competency at the University of Portland and beyond.
