Because People Matter: Thanksgiving Meal Basket Donation Drive

The Moreau Center’s service and justice coordinators (SJCs) are thrilled to again be partnering with Because People Matter to provide Thanksgiving meal baskets to families in need in North Portland, according to Sophie Charles, Moreau Center. In past years, the partnership relied on student-donated meal points to provide the fixings for Thanksgiving meal baskets for over 200 North Portland families. This year, with most students living off-campus, there needs to be a new fundraising strategy.

The Moreau Center is calling on students, faculty, staff, and extended UP family to join in supporting our valuable community partner as well as neighbors in need this Thanksgiving season by contributing to Because People Matter’s GoFundMe campaign using this link between now and November 15. You’ll have the option to sponsor your favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal or an entire Thanksgiving meal spread, whatever works for you.

Anita Gooding, social work, was selected as a 2020-2021 Field Research Scholar by the Transforming Field Education Landscape (TFEL) program at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.
