The 2010 TOTLE – EARTHSCOPE Workshop took place August 1 – 4 at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. Thirty-five K-12 Earth science teachers and five college instructors of geology participated in the 2010 workshop. This immersion workshop involved three days of instruction on Pacific Northwest active continental margin tectonics, earthquakes and tsunami hazards, Cascade volcano hazards, and EarthScope science. On one field day, we journeyed to Copalis Beach, Washington, to investigate the Cascadia tsunami geology that provides evidence for past great earthquakes and tsunamis on the Cascadia subduction zone. On the return leg of that trip, we visited the Elma, Washington GPS station, a component of EarthScope’s Plate Boundary Observatory. On our second field day, we explored areas of Mt Rainier to examine the products of recent eruptive episodes, including volcanic debris flows and lahars (mudflows). The 2010 workshop for K-12 Earth science teachers in Washington State and workshops during the summers of 2008 and 2009 were funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. The EarthScope Program is nation-wide experiment to investigate the structure and evolution of the North American continent and physical processes controlling earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The 2010 workshop was instructed by Robert Butler (University of Portland); Co-Project Director Beth Pratt-Sitaula (Central Washington University); Frank Granshaw (Portland Community College); and Host and Co-Project Director Jill Whitman (Pacific Lutheran University). Our Master Teachers were: Roger Groom (Mt Tabor Middle School); Chris Hedeen (Oregon City H. S.); Bonnie Magura (Jackson Middle School); and Denise Thompson (Orting H. S.). Shelley Olds (UNAVCO Education and Outreach) provided expertise on tectonic applications of high-precision GPS technologies while Tammy Bravo (IRIS Education and Outreach) was our resident expert on educational seismology.
