Support for Fully Online Courses

Posted August 3, 2020 by Benjamin Kahn Filed Under: News, Professional Development

With Fr. Poorman announcing the UP’s Fall will be predominantly online, this seems like a great time to remind and refresh on resources for faculty:

Join our Community

One of the best things you can do is to explore our online Basecamp course to get an idea of how a learning community can thrive online. ATSI has partnered with Learning Commons Administrator, Jeffrey White, and other members of the subcommittee on faculty development to create the Hybrid and Online Learning Basecamp for faculty. This is a great place to explore to learn more, share experiences, and ask questions about online learning.

  • Check the Basecamp calendar! We are scheduling drop in, “ask-me-anything” about Moodle sessions and well as instructional webinars from ATSI and faculty peers who have been using digital tools for learning.
  • You can also browse or ask questions in discussion forums on various online learning topics: Forum – Questions and Comments on Technology Tools

Support

  • Academic Technology Services and Innovation is here for you! We offer technical support, training, and instructional design services to support online learning:
  • Tech Support – atsi@up.edu
  • Training or tech tools consulting: Stephen Loutzenhiser (Instructional Design & Technology Specialist) – loutzenh@up.edu
  • Instructional Design: Maria Erb (Instructional Designer) – erb@up.edu

Designing for the Uncertain Fall

Posted July 2, 2020 by Benjamin Kahn Filed Under: Professional Development

What will teaching look like at UP this Fall? The truth is, no one truly knows. That’s why I wanted to share the episode of the Teaching in Higher Ed podcast that I listened to this morning. The guest, Maria Anderson, observed that “this lack of knowledge for what is concretely going to happen is a barrier for a lot of people” in terms of how they will design for Fall. Maria shares a lot of great strategies and insights that she has already used to make her courses as flexible and resilient as possible and how this helped her to transition smoothly when COVID-19 happened.

If you are interested you can find a full transcript, show notes and more on the TiHE website.

Hybrid Support for Faculty

Posted June 29, 2020 by Benjamin Kahn Filed Under: News, Professional Development

As UP gears up to meet new challenges this Fall, ATSI is hard at work, collaborating with stakeholders from different units of campus to make sure that faculty are supported in the new mode of in-person/at-distance teaching. I want to quickly summarize some of what we are working on:

  • The Hybrid & Online Teaching Basecamp is a Moodle course developed by a subcommittee of the Provost’s Advisory Committee on Contingency Instructional Planning consisting of faculty and representatives from Academic Technology Services and Innovation (ATSI), with input from student stakeholders. This is our hub where we are aggregating resources, tech help and peer support. Every faculty member has access to this Moodle page and its wealth of resources, strategies, and opportunities to connect with colleagues to ask questions and share best practices (see link below for more info.)
  • We will be co-presenting demo session(s) on the classroom technology stack and how it can be used to connect with at-distance students.
  • ATSI will be holding weekly webinars on digital tools that can be used to teach and engage students digitally starting in July. Watch this space for more info!
  • We are creating a resource “knowledge base” website dedicated to providing “just-in-time” help in using technology in the hybrid classroom. The format is based on our popular Moodle Guides site.
  • We continue to support Moodle and integrated tools that can provide asynchronous learning outside of the classroom/class time. Moodle will receive an upgrade later this summer that includes enhancements to the forums module and more.
Moodle Basecamp for Hybrid & Online Teaching is Ready!

ATSI’s top priority is to support faculty in teaching and learning in this challenging new environment. We continue to offer consultation and training on academic technology at UP – please contact us at atsi@up.edu for more info, questions, etc.

Free online Moodle PD

Posted June 3, 2020 by Benjamin Kahn Filed Under: News, Professional Development

It’s hard to find the silver lining in our “new normal” of COVID-19. Amongst so many other, more dire things, the epidemic has disrupted the normal summer opportunities for professional development for many of us at UP. So, I would like to share an online, completely free option with the campus:

Mountain Moodle Moot

This regional Moodle conference (or “moot”), held annually in Helena, MT, is regarded as one of the best and most entertaining in the U.S. This year is the 10th anniversary and the moot is online and free for the first time. This would be well worth registering for if you would like to go deeper into the world of Moodle with sessions from a colorful cast of characters who use Moodle in interesting and diverse ways. I went last year and had a great time networking and learning, so I was disappointed I would not be able to travel to Helena this year. I will be in attendance and hope to (virtually) see others from UP there!

  • Register for Mountain Moodle Moot or submit a proposal.
