My favorite spot to study on campus is the quiet floor of the library in the chairs by the fireplace. I like the quietness and comfortability of the chairs, although the complete silence can be kind of intimidating. I also really like the second-floor bar in the library. This always seems to fill up as the day goes on, but I like the amount of space you get and the opportunity to see and talk with friends and study partners.
My favorite spot to study on campus is the library on the second floor overlooking the main quad. It’s a beautiful spot, especially now with all the leaves on the ground. I love watching the sunset after a long, hard day of studying. It’s also a perfect spot to grab a whiteboard and zone out for hours!! The best way to prepare to study is with a venti coffee in hand, snacks (goldfish are my go-to), headphones, my water bottle, and all the colors of whiteboard markers.
My favorite place to study on campus is the Pilot House! The Pilot House is one of the newest community food and cafe spot on campus. First a couple of prefaces: I cannot study in the library because 1) there are too many friends I see there so I will end up just talking with friends back to back for hours instead of studying (yes that has happened….more than once) and 2) once I step into the library my stress levels jump up ten-fold. Maybe possibly because it’s called a library and that correlates with late night study sessions, but I just feel tense and stressed in the library.
The second preface is that I cannot study at my own house. In my house there are endless amounts of food, which I will just eat during the entire study session. Also, my house has my oh-so comfortable bed. This is not a great idea to study in the proximity of because every 5 minutes I will validate myself to taking a 15 minute nap which will end up turning into a full REM sleep cycle nap.
With those prefaces, I return back to why the Pilot House is my favorite place to study. There is something so relaxing and soothing about studying next to a café; the barista calling out names, the smell and sounds of fresh coffee being pressed and dripping. PLUS you just have to walk a few steps to grab a deliciously caffeinated beverage. I am sure there is some evidence-based research on the correlation of a café and study productivity, because it works!!
The Pilot House is the perfect balance between busy and a social place. There is motion, chatter and people, but once I put in my earphones I tune out everything and get to work. The background chatter and movement add to the ambiance of keeping me awake. If you are lucky enough to snag a tall table near the bay doors, you can study and look outside to the beautiful quad and newly built academic building.
A common productive study day would be: wake up at 0730, get to the pilot house by 0800 to grab a good table, 0805 have a coffee in hand prepared to get to work, work all the way until 1200, then end the study session with a lunch break. Some of my best study sessions have been in the Pilot House!!
Also did I mention they have the best NY Steak Sandwich and garlic fries!!!!
My favorite place to study on campus is the laptop bar in the library! For me, I like to be in a studious place so that I am somewhat held accountable to actually study. The laptop bar is nice because I can plug in and be focused, while also being able to sit back and look outside, people watch, or talk with friends. I don’t mind a few distractions as it keeps me being refreshed, but I also know that the laptop bar is a solid area of the library to have a balanced communal, yet individual space to get work done.
