Volunteer with the MacDonald Center

The Macdonald Center envisions a community where all are respected, safe and supported. This may sound simple, but for those who live on the margins under the burden of poverty, mental illness and/or addiction, this is a vision that moves the heart. Many in Old Town-Downtown Portland are extremely socially isolated, longing for simple companionship.

Teams of two volunteers visit residents in single room occupancy (SRO) hotels within walking distance of Macdonald Center. Volunteers visit the same individuals each week to build relationships and report back to Macdonald Center for debriefing after visits. Visitation Volunteers can also participate in monthly reflections to foster personal reflection and growth. Visits are Monday through Thursday from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Most volunteers choose one day per week. A 3-hour orientation and minimum 6-month commitment is required.
