Sabin School is looking for volunteers to work one on one with 4th – 7th grade students studying math.
Question: Do I have to be good at math to help?
NO – The students are working on basic math, normally around a 3rd or 4th grade level. The goal is to accelerate them all up to grade level over the course of the year. All of the materials are provided including math problems, worked examples and quick tutorials.
Question: Will it always be the same students?
The groups are flexible. What this means is that as students show progress, they move from group to group or to a larger math class. Over time, students will move in and out of the acceleration group. If you connect with a specific student or two, You can work with the same student(s) weekly for as long as they are still in the group.
In order to maintain a safe environment for students, staff and our community, Portland Public Schools conducts background checks on volunteers who work with students. To complete the volunteer background screening, please click here.
