My name is Ian Parkman and I am an Assistant Professor of Marketing in the Pamplin School of Business. My teaching and research interests focus on knowledge-based product innovation, the Creative Industries, marketing intelligence, and design thinking. I have been published and presented my work with the Journal of Brand Management, Journal of Research in Marketing and Entrepreneurship, INFORMS Marketing Science Conference, Product Development Management Association Conference, and the European Academy of Design Conference, among others. I hold an MBA from the University of New Mexico and a Ph.D. is from the University of Oregon.
Design Week Portland is my favorite professional organization. I love the community spirit that goes into the broad array of talks, panels, and open houses that happen during the yearly events. It is an organization that genuinely reflects the spirit of Portland, where world-class organizations open their doors to the city to put on terrific, cutting-edge talks— all with an unpretentious, quirky vibe.
I am a huge Portland Timbers fan. My first call after getting off the phone from receiving a UP job offer from Dean Anderson (after my wife) was to place my deposit on the Timbers season ticket waiting list. I’m still waiting… RCTID (Rose City till I Die)!
At the Pamplin School of Business, I have been fortunate to lead two graduate classes on study tours of Ireland. In 2013 my BUS520, MBA-level Applied Marketing Strategies class, visited organizations in Dublin and Northern Ireland including Guinness,
Wright Bus (maker of London’s iconic red double decker buses), the Google Technology campus, and NovaUCD – University College Dublin’s Innovation center. I will be leading the class of BUS522 Marketing Research in Fall 2017 again to Ireland.
