My name is James (Jim) McKittrick and I am an Executive in Residence for the Pamplin School of Business. I have taught at UP since 2007 after serving as the chief financial officer for Liberty Northwest Insurance Corporation. I began my career with KPMG, then worked for 21 years in various financial positions including chief financial officer with Liberty Northwest. I am currently a board member of the Oregon Society of CPA’s educational foundation.
I have served as a director / officer on 11 other corporate boards, have been the past president of the Insurance Accounting and Systems Association in Portland, Oregon, and am a member of the Oregon Society of CPA’s and the American Institute of CPA’s. I knew I wanted to work with aspiring CPA’s to help them build their careers. I wanted to share my passion and drive with those that shared similar interests.
As far as my personal interests go, I love river rafting, hiking, camping and anything outdoors including travel. I have incorporated travel into my work by facilitating trips during the summer for business undergraduate students to Salzburg, Austria (2015) and London, England (2012, 2017). If you would like to know more about my trips abroad, please let me know. I would be happy to answer any questions you have.
The advice that would share with you is based on the principle that you should do what you love. If you enjoy your work, chances are you’ll be good at it, which will lead to success. The advice I would give to my 20-year-old self would be to choose a career in something that really inspires and interests you. Keep as many options open as you can. Perfect your communication skills, especially when you’re in college, as these skills will help you in whatever you choose to do.
