The Oregon Amateur Sports Foundation (OASF) strives to provide opportunities to individuals in order to promote a healthy and active lifestyle for themselves and their families. Each year, the foundation hosts “The State Games of Oregon” which is the state’s largest Olympic-style sports festival. This is a weekend that is filled with sporting competitions both big and small. At this festival, athletes can compete in any of the 15 sports we offer all across Portland, and will have the chance to thrive in a competitive yet welcoming environment.

At my internship, I was primarily working with the Marketing Department assisting them with the promotion and advertisement of the different sports the foundation currently offers. For the event, I was assigned to contact all the clubs and athletic organizations affiliated with the foundation. This was quite the task because the foundation has so many athletic clubs. As the event drew closer, I was working with the commissioners of each sport ensuring that they had all their supplies they needed to execute their events. In addition, I also had to find speakers for an event that OASF is hosting this October- the National Congress of State Games Symposium. This is a time when leaders of multiple sport organizations across the US come and collaborate and learn how to spread the idea of sportsmanship and the important role it plays in our daily lives.

Thus far my internship has been a great learning experience seeing such a grand scale event like this come together from start to finish. Obviously, there is a ton of work that Emily (another Pilot who I intern with) and I don’t see, but we have been able to get an insider look on all the pieces and people it takes for a large event to come together. Event planning is stressful!  I learned that event planning is really all about coordinating with people, and making sure that all pieces of the puzzle are ready to go!
