Tuesday, July 15, saw all the Pollèntia research teams headed to Palma de Mallorca for a reception hosted by José Ramón Bauzà Díaz, President de les Illes Balears (Balearic Islands). The Major de Alcúdia, Dove Terrace Ventayol, met us in Palma for the reception at the Consulate of the Sea (just across the plaza from Sa Llotja and the Fabre Exhibition), along with Jaume Cardell Perelló (Technical Archaeologist, Consell Insular), Joana Maria Camps (Minister of Education, Consell de Mallorca) and Joan Rotger Seguí (Vice President of Culture for the Consell de Mallorca). With so many VIPs in attendance and so many speeches planned, the lowly UP Team and some of the Barcelona graduate students were worried about dress protocol. Luckily, President Bauzà recognizes the dusty, sweaty reality of archaeological research and relaxed the dress code to the level of jeans and T-shirts, even consenting to appear tieless himself!
Speeches by Major Terrace, Pollèntia Director Miguel Cao, and President Bauzà emphasized the Mallorcan welcome of high school students in Archaeo Spain and the UP Team. All three speakers noted the importance to Mallorca and the city of Alcúdia of the continued excavation of the Roman City of Pollèntia as a historical attraction, as an important contribution to archaeological research, and as a way for Mallorcans to understand their history.
