Woodburn, OR
History Major, Sophomore/Junior
It’s a unique experience to combine travel abroad and archeology, it’d be a huge service to the kid in me. I feel that I’ll be crossing lots of things that I didn’t even know were on my bucket list. The matter of traveling abroad will be enough to broaden my worldview.
Excavating will be a hands-on experience that, as a history major, will make history feel alive. I like to imagine all these different “worlds” we live in, so to excavate an ancient city will be to explore a world through time; worlds within worlds. The ethical aspect of excavating remains is interesting, especially as we attempt to define the significance of digging up these pasts. I’m most curious about what the excavation site means for the people of Alcudia.
Considering the nature of the trip and probably some unpredictable factors that I’ll have to consider, I’ll be focusing on the ‘prudent’ aspect of leadership. I want to practice adapting to my surroundings, which, to me, means creating comprehensive plans that can be adjusted as needed. Despite what happens or how I do things, I hope to carry myself with a positive attitude!
