Add a Grade Item to the Gradebook

Introduction

Any graded activities in Moodle – assignments, quizzes, attendance modules, discussion forums with ratings, etc – are automatically added to the gradebook with a grade value as specified in the activity settings.

Oftentimes, however, you may wish to add a standalone grade item to the Moodle gradebook. This essentially adds a column to your gradebook that is not associated with any digital activity or resource in Moodle. This is often used to track grades for “intangible” student work like class participation, in-class presentations, etc.

Step 1

In your course click the Settings icon (the gear icon top-right) then, click Gradebook setup

Step 2

Scroll to the bottom of the set-up screen and click Add grade item

Step 3

Give your item a name and change settings as desired.

By default, the grade item is worth 100 points. You can change that value here. Optionally, if you want to put the grade item in a category, you can do so.

Click Save to return to the set-up screen.
