For the last four years, Villa Maria Hall, the rowdy all-guys dorm on campus, puts on a formal dance in the spring semester. This year was no different. Villa’s Hall Council got the dance organized on the quiet side of the Commons and advertised it across campus. Saturday April 22nd arrived and students were ready to experience prom all over again, all dressed up with suits and dresses.
Students walked into the commons ready to slow dance their way to a fun Saturday night.
The DJ was ready to get the night started and played popular pop songs to get the crowd excited for the night ahead. The room was pretty empty and students, especially Villa’s Hall Council, were anxious that the room would never fill up.
Nevertheless, the night went on. But only 30 minutes in, some students started to leave. Looks of dismay appeared on the faces of Villa’s Hall Council. Could the night end early?
“I’m not really happy about the turn out tonight,” Villa Residence Assistant Sean Curtis said.
45 minutes in and the night was over. What could have been a fun event on a rainy day in Portland ended with disappointment. The dance has been fairly successful in previous years, where the dance would go on for hours and the quiet side of the commons actually seemed full. But this night was different.
“I’m not sure what happened here tonight,” Villa Hall Director Matthew Connolly said. “I’ve heard this dance is a hit around campus. I wonder what was different this year.”
Villa’s Hall Council will take the next few days to examine what could have possibly gone wrong.
“We’ll take the loss on this one,” Hall Council member Tom Bornhop said. “But we’ll try and make changes to it and try again next year.”
