She has a dog named after a pasta dish, inspired Malia Obama to take a gap year, and labels herself a creative procrastinator. Who is she? Shelby Vaculin is a purple-haired, extremely talkative student from Danville, Calif.
Transferring from several different colleges all over the country and taking various chunks of time off, Vaculin has finally picked University of Portland to finish out her degree in organizational communications. With her journey in and out of different schools she learned one thing for sure—she is a huge advocate for taking a gap year between high school graduation and starting college. “It’s good to take a break from education to test the waters and make sure what you think you want to do in college is what you really want to do,” she said. “You meet cool people and have real life experiences.” As aforementioned, Vaculin in fact claims she inspired Malia Obama to take a gap year. This is one of the many comical claims Vaculin makes in her daily life.
Vaculin labels herself “a pro” making impulse decisions, buying too many running clothes and dying her hair different colors. Vaculin actually has no idea what she wants to do after she graduates in the fall of 2017 but knows she wants to do a lot of talking. If she could talk for a living—she would.
Her face lights up as she explains that her ideal day would be getting up, going on a nice run in good weather, “75 and clear, not too hot, not too cold, very light breeze,” getting a good group of people together drinking, eating and having good conversation. She can most likely be found in a coffee shop reading a Harry Potter book or curled up on her couch with a glass of wine watching West Wing.
