Malika Andrews has worked hard to prepare herself for a post graduate degree in journalism. She hasn’t left many stones untouched.
She’s covered the Portland Trail Blazers for The Associated Press, worked as an intern for The Denver Post and currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief for University of Portland’s student run media outlet, The Beacon, while also working as a college basketball reporter for Yahoo! Sports. She also has had bylines in The Advocate, Teen Vogue and the San Jose Mercury and has done work with ESPN and ESPN the Magazine.
After she graduates in May, Andrews will move to New York to work in The New York Times’ sports department as a James Reston Fellow.
“I really couldn’t be more excited to join the Times,” Andrews said. “They do some amazing work. I can’t wait to be a part of the team there and learn from the reporters and editors there.”
But Andrews hasn’t always known she wanted to be a journalist. She applied to join the Beacon at the beginning of her sophomore year because she had a few friends that worked there. She didn’t have any prior journalism experience.
“It just ended up being the perfect fit,” Andrews said. “I grew up watching sports and playing sports since my dad is a personal trainer. And I have always loved to write. I’d love to say something poetic about the writing part, but I went to a high school that was super focused on writing. That’s just something they pounded into you. And I fell in love with it.”
Andrews says she wants to always keep one hand in sports, but also hopes to get the chance to cover race, culture and politics as well.
