Clare Duffy is the kind of person with a plan for everything.
“Seriously everything,” she explains.
However, her life after graduating from the University of Portland, where she is a senior, seems uncertain. But her long-term goals are clear.
“I’m getting comfortable with the idea of not having a really solid, long-term plan at the moment,” Duffy said. “I’m trying to enjoy it.”
Duffy, a communication studies major, has spent her undergraduate career preparing for a career in journalism. She got the writing bug at a young age. She grew up in San Luis Obispo, Calif., where she worked for her high school newspaper.
As a college journalist, she has risen from news reporter, to news editor and is now the managing editor at the Beacon, UP’s student run media outlet. She spent last summer interning at The Bulletin in Bend, Ore. and has accepted a post-graduate internship at the Portland Business Journal. She is currently working as a production intern for Oregon Public Broadcasting’s talk show “Think Out Loud”.
In the future, Duffy hopes to combine her love of writing with her love of travel to become a foreign correspondent for a publication like the New York Times or 60 Minutes. She spent her sophomore year studying abroad in Salzburg, Austria.
“I would love the opportunity to write and travel as a job, to be able to tell cool, unique stories. Right now, there are things happening that will be important pieces of history that I’m getting to cover, and that’s just awesome.”
