Teen pop bands DNCE and Colemen Hell will play at this year’s Rock the Bluff concert. The announcement was made by Campus Program Board Director Jacque Nelson at midnight at the annual Dance of the Decades event last month.
“We wanted to shake it up a little bit,” Nelson said of the band selection. “This was more of a throwback than the bands we’ve had in the past.”
The lead singer of DNCE – most famous for its song “Cake by the Ocean” – is Joe Jonas, the Disney Channel pop sensation. Other band members include guitarist JinJoo Lee, keyboard player Cole Whittle and drummer Jack Lawless.
According to Nelson, the band agreed to play for around $85,000.
Senior Sterling Houton says that he can’t wait to see Jonas because his little sister is a huge fan.
“Anna really loves him,” Houton said. “So when I told her, she squealed a lot and it was fun. I definitely think this is one of the biggest names that UP has brought to campus for Rock the Bluff since I’ve been here. Although Andy Grammer was kind of cool.”
Houton, a Portland native, is excited to use his guest ticket to bring his sister to the show. He’s hoping she, too, will attend UP in a few years.
Rock the Bluff will take place in the Chiles Center on April 8 at 8 p.m. The event coincides with Weekend on The Bluff, the official visit weekend for potential students and future Pilots. It is free for students, but a limited number of tickets are available.
