Oregon sculptor, Frederic Littman, created this sculpture of the Blessed Virgin Mary reading to the Christ child (also known as Sedes Sapientiae or Seat of Wisdom). This sculpture has graced the building since it first opened in 1958. As part of the building renovation it just underwent a major cleaning to remove the corrosion from the lead material and return it to its original glory.

The interior details are filling in nicely! And since a picture is worth a thousand words, the photo galleries have been revised for easier viewing by floor and major feature.

The holidays are near and the building project is reaching the halfway mark. The Terrace Room has been a cozy space, and of course, we had to do some decorating for the season.
As we pause for Winter Break, we appreciate how supportive the campus community has been during this interim library year. In Fall semester, an average of 1000 books per week were requested from the storage collection and the paging system has been a great success. We also taught a record number of library instruction sessions and the temporary classroom in Franz Hall has been an excellent space.
However, we do look forward to welcoming you into the renovated library later in 2013. It will be a happy New Year!
Observant people passing by the building have noticed that the new stairwell goes above the second floor. Many have wondered if another floor is being added. Nope – not in this project! The stairwell goes up an extra level to provide easy rooftop access for maintenance. Now Physical Plant staff won’t have to go through a small trapdoor in a closet to reach the roof!
Take a post-Thanksgiving tour of the building renovation on November 27 or November 28. The next tours are in February, so this is a good chance to see the interior changes in the earlier stages. Spaces are limited so email Kathy O’Connell to reserve a spot. Tours start at 3:45 p.m. from the Franz Hall lobby. Closed toe shoes are required.
Happy Halloween! Some libraries have cats, but for today, we have a hardworking Dalmatian.
Near the end of each month we are offering building tours for those that want to see the renovation progress firsthand. The October tours are coming up on October 30 and October 31. Reserve a spot by emailing Kathy O’Connell. Tours meet at 3:45 p.m. in the Franz Hall Lobby. Closed toe shoes required.
