A major goal for Innovation in the Franz Center this year has been the creation of an Innovation Lab and Eric Anctil, Director for Innovation, is pleased to announce that construction of a lab space is set to begin in early spring.
“I am very excited about this space and what we are going to build,” Anctil says of the upcoming construction. “We’re taking design cues from existing spaces at centers around the country, but also from places like Ziba here in Portland. The new lab will have glass whiteboards that wrap around the room, movable furniture, and flat screen monitors that computers can stream to wirelessly for presentations and collaborative work.”
Anctil says the new Innovation Lab is being created to provide an “ideation space” on campus to support Franz Center Innovation programs and activities, but also to draw private industry to campus with a space that invites innovative thinking and design.
“Our goal is to build an innovation space that students and faculty can use, but also to create a place for businesses when they come to us and say, ‘We need help moving our ideas forward; how might you to able to help?’ Having a space to bring outside stakeholders to campus for workshops and to mentor students is critical for us to move our innovation efforts forward,” Anctil says.
The Innovation Lab will be located in the Franz Center, Buckley Center 216. Construction should be completed during spring semester and an invitation to a grand opening reception will be announced in a future newsletter.
