SOC/SW 497: Internship for Credit
Professor Schallert
Have you considered a community internship to help round out your learning in the classroom? In Fall 2022, the Sociology and Social Work Department will again offer an internship for credit course (SOC/SW 497) where you’ll get the opportunity to work with an agency in the Portland area while having the support of your peers and professor through a 1-hour weekly seminar.
Examples of past internships include the Northeast Emergency Food Program, Lifeworks Day Treatment Center, Do Good Multnomah, the Vancouver Police Department, and many others including hospice agencies, restorative justice programs, and immigrant rights centers.
SOC/SW 497 is flexible based on your credit choice; you can take the course for 1-3 credits depending on your schedule and capacity. Each credit values 40 hours at your internship placement in the community (up to 120 hours/semester for 3 credits). The course is also designed to work around your schedule, and seminars are a combination of ethical troubleshooting, mutual support, professional career development, and self-reflection.
Note that you may take the course in your major to fulfill a major elective requirement or you can register under SW to fulfill an upper-division credit outside of your primary major.
