MUS 309A: World Music

This is an online course that meets via Zoom once per week on Thursday 9:45am – 11:10 am.
Welcome! We will travel around the world in one short semester! This course is a study of the music and musical idioms of a variety of non-Western cultures. Previous musical experience is not necessary. MUS 309a is the study of music as a cultural construct and examines diverse music cultures of the world with a focus on cultural contexts, tradition, identity, and activism. Introduces discipline of ethnomusicology. Ethnomusicologists study world music as a means to understand any music from anywhere in the world as social practice. This world music class will provide rich insights into different cultures, communication patterns, rhythms, instruments, sounds, and ways of making music and inform your own music and musical interests.
