Earn Money Back After College by Majoring In… English!

“But what are you going to do with an English major?”  Such questioning is prompted by the perception that English is a track of study that will leave us with mountains of debt and no way to pay them off.

As it turns out, however, majoring in English is not such a bad way to earn back all the money you are currently spending on college.  A fellow English major, Dawn Dugan, who has gone on to become a well-published writer of both articles and books, recently outlined the top “8 College Degrees That Will Earn Your Money Back” for the website Salary.com.  The top eight degrees include both highly predictable majors, as well as a few surprises, including an academic “investment” in English.

The article names speechwriter, communications manager, and web content manager as potential careers for English majors, with median salaries between $78,000 and $89,000 a year.  Fueled by a skyrocketing growth in social medi which almost always necessitates writing, employers increasingly need content writers, public relations workers, and website editors.Perhaps at last we can  put an end to the myth that teaching is the only job an English degree can find. So as our welcome back present for the year of 2012-2013 we remind you not to despair, but to continue studying English with ferocity!
