A New Year for Sigma Tau Delta

While many students at the University of Portland might be familiar with some of its more well-known honor societies, like Alpha Lambda Delta or Delta Epsilon Sigma, many students aren’t aware that the university has its very own English honor society: Sigma Tau Delta!  While our STD chapter is fairly new, and is still getting off the ground, we have a lot of fun events and volunteer activities planned for this year.

In order to join STD, students must be junior or senior English majors or minors and have an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher.  STD members participate in a number of scholarly and volunteer activities, all relating to English.  Last spring, STD hosted and participated in several events, including a read-in at The Anchor, a scavenger hunt at Powell’s Books, and volunteer work for the School of Education Reading Fair.  The year finished with the induction of seven new members.

This fall, STD kicked off the year by hosting an English major social.  English majors and minors were invited to attend and play games, eat food, discuss literature, and get to know the new English majors.  We have many more events planned for the future.  Currently, we are working on coordinating volunteer work at Rosa Parks Elementary through Portland Public Schools’ Start Making a Reader Today program.

STD will be inducting new members again this spring!  All students meeting the requirements for membership will be invited and are encouraged to join our community.  In addition, STD plans to host several events open to all English majors and minors.
