Public Safety and Information Services would like to remind you to be aware of email and phone scams for the purpose of gaining access to your computer and/or personal data. Members of our community have received phone solicitations claiming to be “Windows tech support” and reporting that there is serious virus infection on the UP member’s computer. Please do not respond to such requests. These are an attempt to gain control of your computer and infect it with ransomware. Perpetrators then require payment to de-crypt your data. If you have concerns regarding such requests related to your computer, account and passwords, or other technology, please visit the University Help Desk. Information Services and Public Safety encourage following Federal Trade Commission guidance – “If you get an unexpected pop-up, call, spam email or other urgent message about problems with your computer, stop. Don’t click on any links, hang up the phone, don’t give control of your computer and don’t send any money.” More detailed information, an educational video, and the quote above can be found on this FTC website: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0346-tech-support-scams If you believe you have been the victim of this or a similar scam, please contact the UP Help Desk at firstname.lastname@example.org or 503-943-7000.
