“Scenes and Revelations” Opens Oct. 1, Hunt Center Theater

scenes and revelations“Scenes and Revelations” Opens Oct. 1, Hunt Center Theater: The performing and fine arts department presents Elan Garonzik’s “Scenes and Revelations,” with performances on Wednesday, October 1 through Sunday, October 5, at 7:30 p.m. (2 p.m. Sunday), in Mago Hunt Center Theater. In 1894, at the height of America’s westward movement, four Pennsylvania sisters must decide whether to forge ahead or to move in the opposite direction as they are haunted by their pasts and face uncertain futures. Faculty and staff can use season passes to reserve complimentary tickets, and students can reserve free tickets for the Wednesday or Thursday shows. Contact the Hunt Center box office at 7287 to reserve your seats, or visit the box office in the Hunt Center lobby from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Come See The Crab Lab, Oct. 3

Crab LabAll students, staff, faculty, and friends are invited to visit the Crab Lab during its open house on Friday, October 3, from noon to 5 p.m., in Swindells 139 and 128, according to Tara Maginnis, biology. With over 500 gallons of saltwater and six species of crabs, there is plenty to explore. Maginnis and her biology research students will be there explaining how the lab works and what kind of research goes on there (and no, they don’t eat the crabs and neither can you).

Constitution Day Presentation by Gary Malecha, Sept. 17

malechaThe policical science department will mark Constitution Day with a lecture by UP political science professor Gary Malecha, titled “Congressional Elections in a New Political Environment.” Malecha will discuss the upcoming 2014 congressional elections and how they might impact presidential-congressional relations and policy which will make up the rest of the Obama presidency. His lecture, free and open to all, is set for Wednesday, September 17, at 6 p.m., in Shiley Hall room 101.

Dan DeWeese Reading, Sept. 22

deweeseAuthor Dan DeWeese will read from his work as the first 2014-2015 guest of the English department’s Readings & Lectures Series on Monday, September 22, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center room 163. His reading is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public.

DeWeese is the author of a novel, You Don’t Love This Man, and a story collection titled Disorder. He is also founding editor of Propeller, a web magazine of books, film, art, and culture, and of Propeller Books, the magazine’s publishing imprint. He teaches writing and film courses at Portland State University.

Math Colloquium, Sept. 16

Inauguration of the 20th UP President, September 26

Father Mark Poorman, 20th president of the UniversityRev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., will be inaugurated as University of Portland’s 20th president on September 26, 2014. The Inauguration Mass at 11:45 a.m. and the ceremony at 3 p.m. in the Chiles Center will cap two days of public celebration honoring the new president. All University of Portland community members are invited to celebrate this historic event.

Fr. Poorman was selected as the 20th president by the University of Portland Board of Regents in January 2014. He also served as executive vice president since 2011.

Inauguration events will include:

  • Faculty & Staff Reception, Wednesday, September 24, 2014, 3:30-5:30 p.m., The Bluff/Bauccio Commons.
  • Classes will be cancelled on Friday, September 26, after 11:15 a.m.
  • Inauguration Mass, 11:45 a.m., Chiles Center. All UP community members are welcome. Faculty members are expected to process in academic regalia’ please report to the Chiles Center as soon as possible after 11:15 a.m.
  • Inauguration Ceremony, 3 p.m., Chiles Center. All UP community members are welcome. Faculty will be expected to process in academic regalia; due to the large number of guests from UP and other institutions, faculty are to report to the Chiles Center by 2 p.m.
  • Inauguration Reception immediately following the Inauguration Ceremony, Chiles Center Plaza.

Parents Night Out, May 9th

ollieBLAHUniversity parents are invited to take the opportunity to enjoy four hours of free time with their significant others while the UP onsite daycare watches their children on Parents Night Out, Friday, May 9, from 6-10 p.m. This service is provided by Vermont Hills Family Life Center daycare/preschool. The cost is $30 per child and $40 for two children and includes dinner for the kids. All UP faculty and staff are welcome to take advantage of this service. 2014 Commencement, May 4th

2012Commencement-7003533-X3The University is preparing for a record number of graduates in its 2014 spring commencement exercises on Sunday, May 4, set for 1:30 p.m. at the Earle A. and Virginia H. Chiles Center on campus, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd. University president Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C., will confer an anticipated 818 bachelor’s degrees on Sunday. Also participating will be 111 students who expect to be awarded bachelor’s degrees at the end of the summer, for an all-time record 929 undergraduate students. Anne Thompson, NBC News’ Chief Environmental Affairs correspondent, will deliver the commencement address.

The University will hold a separate commencement ceremony for an anticipated 212 graduate students on Saturday, May 3, at 12:30 p.m. in the Chiles Center. Beauchamp will be the commencement speaker.

Baccalaureate Mass, May 3rd

Please note that Mass will not be celebrated on Sunday, May 4, in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher due to commencement ceremonies and activities.

Holocaust Remembrance Day, April 25

She will share her experience as a hidden child in the Netherlands during World War II. The event is free and open to all and light refreshments will be provided.
