After receiving an email for Dr. Van Hoomissen about a specific internship (REU), sophomore biology major, Joshua George, followed up. He admits, “I was looking for any type of internship for this summer for some additional experience in a new field of study. Also, benefits such as free travel and a decent stipend wouldn’t hurt either!” He wrote several essays, submitted unofficial transcripts and sent two letters of recommendation—and he got the internship. Josh is headed to Lincoln, Nebraska to work on Redox Biology at UNL. In Nebraska, he will be under the supervision of Dr. Jiri Adamec, working to find a sensitive technique to profile fatty acid amides.
Joshua is originally from Albuquerque, NM but went to high school and two years of college in Las Vegas before transferring to the Pacific Northwest. Although he has not too involved with anything directly on campus at UP, he has been in commanding positions in a professional community service organization for two years.
With his biology degree, he hopes to go on and get a graduate or professional degree. Furthermore, he would like to pursue biomedical research as well as teach at the university level. Long term, Joshua wants to be an accomplished enough scientist to speak at world-class lectures. Specifically, he wants to be on several TED talks to inspire younger generations to get into the sciences.
When asked about how he felt about receiving this internship, Joshua replied, “I am very happy to have this opportunity!”
Joshua, we could not agree more with you! Congratulations!
