Brian Doyle Humor Scholarship RFP

You could earn a scholarship for your sense of humor! No joke — you could earn one of five $3,333 Brian Doyle Scholarships in Gentle & Sidelong Humor for students who propose a way to bring some laughs to The Bluff.

The Brian Doyle Annual Scholarships, also known as The Brian Doyle Annual Scholarships in Gentle & Sidelong Humor, were established in 2012 by John and Patricia Beckman.

To honor Brian, known for bringing light, laughter, and levity to nearly every subject he wrote or spoke on, the Beckmans developed this scholarship so that Brian could help foster an intentional way for students to develop projects where they could seek and find the joys, hilarity, and surprises that can be discovered when not being too serious while learning.

Applications for the Brian Doyle Scholarships in Gentle & Sidelong are now being accepted, and five students will win scholarship awards of $3,333 for their proposals to bring some laughs to The Bluff.

This scholarship will be awarded for the 2018 Fall term; freshman, sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply. To apply, undergraduates should send an email with “Humor Scholarship” in the subject line to Kerry Lyles at lyles@up.edu. The email application should include first and last name, student ID number, and a brief but detailed idea for a humorous project that will be completed if selected for the scholarship. The project can be anything — videos, comic books, comedy nights, websites, performances, graphic novels, you name it! — but it must be something that is presented, published or posted publicly by the end of the 2018-2019 academic year.

Applications are due on April 1, 2018. Let your humor run wild!

John and Patricia Beckman had an audacious idea: harness the power of humor to transform the world! And let’s tap into the capacious imaginations and talents of the University of Portland to treat humor as “a communal energy, a creative way to puncture arrogance and outwit violence.”

And so the Beckman Humor Project was born, a living force. What can it offer our bruised, blessed world?

Speakers, concerts, exhibitions, performances, graphic novels, stand-up, research… if it can be imagined, if it can scrape a bit of crud off the world by making someone laugh, it can find a home in the Beckman Humor Project.
