Associated Students of the University of Portland

Constituency Reports

As part of the duties of ASUP Senators, they are to collect feedback from the students they represent, also known as their constituents. This feedback, which can include comments, concerns, and questions, is then reported at the weekly ASUP Senate Meetings as Constituency Reports.

March 2019

Week of March 18th

  • Confusion about when registration is (Sen. Mitchell)
  • Raccoons are back and more aggressive than the squirrels (Sen. Mitchell)
  • Complaints about a lack of space in the Library (Sen. Mandla)
  • Non-music majors want to know where they can practice music on campus (Sen. Taylor)
  • Wifi in the Library is terrible (Sen. Moore)
  • Students unsure if voting in ASUP elections is still credit-based (Sen. Owen)
  • Developing something with the Office of Residence Life for students transitioning to off-campus living (Sen. Owen)
  • Complaint from a group that is having difficulties in trying to work with Espresso UP since Joe has left (Sen. Anderson)
  • Xan has heard that off-campus students want lockers on campus for students to store their stuff (Sen. Kasper)
  • The chargers at the Library’s checkout need updating (Sen. Kasper)
  • Complaints about taking removing the stop signs by the Library – can we put in flashing lights? (Sen. Millett)
  • Need to be a fifth-year Senate position – affects Engineering & ROTC students in particular (Sen. Paumier)
  • Need more chairs outside the classrooms in Franz (Sen. Paumier)
  • Request for a CAS Career Fair (Sen. Paumier)
  • Proposal: equal distribution of fries and tots in the Commons (Sen. Paumier)
  • Met about wifi complaints in Tyson – approving access points, adding a satellite to the new building. They would love to come and talk more about the issues with Senate (Sen. Paino)
  • People want the garage doors in the Pilot House open on nice days (Sen. Mayer)
  • People want wifi available outside in the Quad (Sen. Moore)

Week of March 11th

  • Stop signs removed outside of Beauchamp & Lund, between Chiles à more dangerous now (Sen. Krigger)
  • Good feedback about Pilot Express over Spring Break (Sen. Owen)
  • UP mobile app wasn’t working before break (Sen. Owen)
  • Constituent told me that they were having a mental health crisis, went to the Health & Counseling Center, were asked if they were suicidal, and were turned away when they said they weren’t (Sen. Mitchell)
  • Engineering students can’t take certain classes in certain semesters, so it’s hard to graduate on-time or in four years (Sen. Moore)
  • It’s hard to take classes early because you can only take capstone your junior & senior year (Sen. Mandla)
  • Requests for more spicy food and with labels to distinguish them (Sen. Moore)
  • Requests for manga in the Library (Sen. Paumier)
  • Requests for a CAS career fair (Sen. Paumier)
  • Requests for orange chicken in the P-House (Sen. Paumier)

  • Request for soy sauce in the Commons (Sen. O’Connell)

  • Wonderful feedback about the CPB dance and the new space (Sen. Krigger)
  • Have new ASUP service directors work with past service directors to teach them the ropes (Sen. Taylor)
  • Complaints about the virtual computers in Franz & the Library – blink off & on while you’re working, not logging-in (Sen. Anderson)
  • Online testing format, Exemplify, has problems for Nursing students (Sen. Paino)
  • Lights off in East Quad – safety issue (Sen. Paino)
  • Request for more pie – pie on Wednesday (Sen. Paumier)
  • Request for more woodchips on the path near Christie (Sen. Paumier)
  • Notification of letters for students in addition to packages (Sen. Paumier)
  • Bring back old French fries to the Grill (Sen. Paumier)
  • Amazing feedback about the dance. Only negative was the bar closing (Sen. Kasper)
  • Coat check was done very well at the dance – faster than in the past (Sen. Millett)
  • Wifi issues, especially in the Library on Sundays and basements (Sen. Moore)
  • P-Plant worsens the mud on the East Quad bark trail by driving on it – idea: put on black mesh (Sen. Moore)
    1. That would be expensive compared to bark (Sen. O’Connell)
  • Tall lights in the main parking lot were flickering – freaked people out (Sen. Owen)
  • The Beacon and local news reported that a student slid off the road in the west hills, but there were no delays/cancellations – safety concern (Sen. Owen)
  • When it’s raining, we should have a shuttle service to drive students around on campus (Sen. Taylor)
    1. The Public Safety van has been helpful with me due to my knee (Speaker Boos)
  • Webprint doesn’t work, which has made printing difficult (Sen. Mathias)

Week of February 18th:

  • Tours were in the Commons all at the same time – super long lines (Sen. Moore)
  • Shipstad’s recycling is completely shut down because students weren’t separating items correctly (Sen. Moore)
  • Cobwebs covering the back window of the Commons (Sen. Mayer)
  • Reason for raise in prices of course packs: a company now checks our course packs about copyright – done by individual professors before, which held UP liable for being sued. The funds now go back to the university by having them in the bookstore rather than the print shop (Sen. Millett)
  • Have an option to live in dorms without food plan (Sen. Paumier)
  • Introduce manga into the Library (Sen. Paumier)
  • Have an ID scanner rather than swiping to get into dorms (Sen. Paumier)
  • Extend hours in Beauchamp to 8:00 am on weekends (Sen. Taylor)
  • More people hired in the Health & Counseling Center – having to wait weeks amidst mental health crises ( Taylor)
  • Blocked off trash shoots in Villa (Sen. Taylor)
  • Reached out to people in the neighborhood about bringing their dogs to campus à starting to walk dogs here more (Sen. Mathias)
  • Aggressive squirrels on campus (Sen. Mitchell)
  • Campus-wide wifi has notoriously been bad – Help Desk said the problem is the router box access points in dorms. Biggest problems in Hag Ty & Christie (Sen. Paino)
  • Mack’s Market should sell shampoo & conditioner (Sen. Taylor)

Week of February 11th:

  • Terrace Room being used as a classroom for nursing students – tables not cleaned, old food on them (Sen. Moore)
  • P-House closed early this past week due to weather – what would happen if there was a big storm? (Sen. Moore)
  • Increased UP affiliation with other universities – more collaboration between student governments, majors, professions (Sen. Owen)
  • Great feedback about CPB’s decision to reschedule the dance – commitment to safety and student needs (Sen. Krigger)
  • Bon App menus and hours are hard to find online (Sen. Taylor)
    1. They’re on the UP mobile app (Sen. Mathias)
  • Some people like having plastic straws (Sen. Taylor)
  • Water-bottle fillers in the Library are broken – basement & second floor (Sen. Mathias)
  • People have fallen on the Christie trail while walking to classes (Sen. Moore)

  • “Give yourself another raise and take away more money from clubs”
  • Problems with access to wifi
  • Lines too long with Bon App

  • Publicly release the Bon App contract we have with the University

Week of February 4th:

  • Freshmen confused about Dance of the Decades – thought that CPB picked a decade but they can actually go as any decade (Sen. Millett)
  • Complaints about the campus using rock salt for snow/ice – bad for bike and vehicle tires, bad for the environment (Sen. Owen)
  • Heard from constituent during Friends of Trees event that there are no composting bins for non-food compostable materials (Sen. Owen)
  • Only brunch options for students on weekends, not lunch (Sen. Moore)
  • Issues with the Accessibility & Education Office: treats professors & students in a condescending manner, confidentiality breached or students not made aware of their policy, general lack of competency to provide equal access (VP Gallagher)
  • Report that some counselors in the Health & Counseling Center are not licensed or are in the process of getting licensed à not appropriate to call them psychiatrists when they’re not licensed. Issues with confidentiality with counselors in some cases (VP Gallagher)
  • Lack of Diversity Center programming & resources – students don’t feel welcome and are unsure of its purpose. Hawaiian students specifically felt uncomfortable with the photo displayed of students walking on campus – felt it was tokenizing. We can do better to make it more welcoming and define its usage (Dir. Wester)
  • Student asked about that the Public Safety video “Run, Fight, Hide” about active shooters be distributed with the alcohol & drug videos from UP (Sen. Taylor)

January 2019

Week of January 28th:

  • Commons closes early (Sen. Millett)
  • P-House got rid of healthy options & sometimes doesn’t come with correct ingredients
  • Mack’s Market is overpriced and not reasonable for students without meal plans
  • The Commons only has breakfast until the afternoon on the weekends and students would like lunch options
    • They’re working on that (Sen. Mathias)
  • The UP app is not correct with what’s being served/offered on campus (Sen. Mayer)
  • Constituents would like to see more representation from the University Committees at Senate Meetings (Sen. Taylor)
  • Students were asking about what’s in place for emergency drills (Sen. Taylor)
  • Students want to know about the shuttle schedule (Sen. Moore)
    • It’s on the UP website
  • Two new student members on the Student Affairs Committee but many students are unaware that they can join the committees, so we need to broadcast those opportunities (Sen. Owen)
  • Only heard positive feedback from the Timberline Terror event (Sen. Mitchell)
  • More requests for 24-hour spaces on campus (Sen. Mitchell)
  • More student interest in getting involved in ASUP committees (Sen. Moore)
  • Lines going out the door in the Commons (VP Gallagher)
  • Unnamed & unmarked portrait on the third floor of Franz – I’m assuming this is Fr. Wilson’s portrait à reaching out to administration to remove it (VP Gallagher)

Week of January 21st:

  • Plaques from Awards Night needs to be updated (Sen.Taylor)
  • Windows at Pilot House have cobwebs and scratches all over them (Sen.Moore)
  • The 21+ only space in the Pilot House is underutilized (Sen. Moore)
    • Now open from 8:00 pm – close on weekdays. But according to Oregon law, the space needs to be closed off on the weekends (Speaker Boos)
  • Required course materials from the Print Shop have been marked up approx. 300% this year. Students and faculty are upset (Sen. Owen)
  • Students want to know why Willamette Blvd on the bend near the Bluff was closed off by police today. A report by PSafe could put students’ minds at ease (Sen. Owen)
    • A car drove off the embankment but the driver survived (VP Gallagher)
  • Requests from students to have ASUP participation at and advertisement of Diversity Dialogues events (Pres. Nath)
  • Bathrooms in Pilot House need to be better cleaned and stocked (Sen.Paumier)
  • Signs for meal points should be put up again to help students (Sen.Paumier)
  • Redo path from Pilot House to Christie – still a muddy mulch path (Sen.Paumier)
  • Students want food carts (Sen. Taylor)
  • Students want feminine products provided in accessible areas (Sen. Taylor)
  • The location of the Belmont Goats is unsafe due to high drug use nearby. We need to let students know to be careful (Sen. Taylor)
    • Will speak with the UPNA (Sen. Mathias)
  • Reports about MLK Day and how students wish it were observed this year. Underwhelming University response & acknowledgement (Sen. Krigger)
  • The Beacon app is not currently working (Dir. Wester)
  • Is there anywhere to buy feminine products on campus? (Sen. Moore)
  • Can be purchased in the bookstore but expensive (Dir. Burks)

Week of January 14th:

  • Someone asked when clubs will be notified about their budget (Sen. Joglekar)
  • It’s on Engage and club leaders received emails (Dir. Wester)
  • A couple constituents have complained about the accessibility/usability of the club recognition & creation site – the process didn’t seem very streamlined (Sen. Owen)
  • From before break: the path by the construction near Waldschmidt is very dark at night (Sen. Moore)
  • Some transfer students this spring have been lost and asked if there are buddies for them to get acquainted to campus – no workshop for them (Sen. Moore)
  • A student emailed about the Diversity Space during Finals Week – it was locked after 9:00 pm and PSafe said they treated it as a regular classroom since they don’t know what the University wants to do with it à need to extend the hours and communicate with PSafe about the use of the room (Pres. Nath)
    • We need to find out if there’s going to be a change with how Dr. Contreras ran it last semester, since he has the keys (Speaker Boos)
  • A number of students had their cars broken into over break that were on campus and weren’t notified about it (Sen. Mayer)

December 2018

Week of December 3rd:

  • Light above the crosswalk on the university side is out (Sen. Dekker)
  • People want to know the costs if you break or lose your ID (Sen.Dekker)
  • First time it’s broken or lost you can get one for free; second time if it’s broken and you bring the pieces then it’s free, but not without the pieces (Speaker Boos)
  • Changing the reimbursement inbox by Brandon’s desk in the ASUP Office– unclear (Sen. Dekker)
  • Desks that are on the quiet floor in the rest of the library/the private cubbies (Sen. Dekker)
  • A lot of computers in the library – maybe replace with desks (Sen.Dekker)
  • People want to figure out a way to make sure that study rooms are not going to 
waste – that people book them and go (Sen. Dekker)
  • You lose the reservation 30minutes after your time was supposed to start and you’re allowed to go into any study room until somebody kicks you out (Sen. Anderson)
  • There is no 24-hour space on campus besides the dorms –> off- campus/commuter students don’t have a space to do work on campus after the library closes at 2:00 am (the library was intended to be a 24-hour space) (Sen. Owen)
  • In the Commons the water button on the soda fountain gets stuck (Sen. Papoutsakis)

  • Complaints that the tree in front of Franz is not lit enough (Sen. Owen)
  • Request for a tree in Franz Lobby (Sen. Taylor)
  • People love the new syrups in the Pilot House: cardamom, mint (Sen. Krigger)
  • Complaint about new fries in the Pilot House (Sen. Moore)
    • Back to normal now (Sen. Dekker)
  • Students unable to bring food into Commons for Friendsgiving due to non-compete clause à moved to St. Mary’s. No other space to eat outside food on campus (Sen. Paumier)

Week of November 19th:

  • Questions about ASUP election process – done by credits à students not able to vote with their class for people that would represent them (Sen. Owen)
  • A constituent that had senior standing, although they were a junior, couldn’t vote for their class (Sen. Krigger)
  • Need a stop sign outside Haggerty & Tyson and Fields & Schoenfeldt near Fr. Poorman’s house (Sen. Dekker)
  • If you’re not a full time student you’re not allowed to vote (Sen. Millett)
    • Because they don’t pay the Student Activities Fee (Sen. Dekker)
  • No compost bin in Mehling Hall (Sen. Musquiz)
  • Several students said they’re very excited for the Tree Lighting (Pres. Nath)
  • Several students loved Opus Prize Week and wanted to see ASUP work on more interfaith initiatives (Pres. Nath)
  • Door inside the Pilot House squeaks very loudly (Sen. Millet)

Week of November 12th:

  • Problems scheduling ASUP vans with OSA – two difficulties in reserving them for Mock Trial (Sen. Krigger)
  • Constituent found a staple in burger from the Pilot House (Sen. Dekker)
  • Complaints about plastic straws back in the Pilot House (Sen. Owen)
  • Limited majors for engineering students (Sen. Owen)
  • Request for more diverse/multi-religious holiday decorations (Sen. Moore)
  • Lack of ketchup in Pilot House (Sen. Taylor)
  • UP mobile app isn’t updated with correct food information (Sen. Dekker)
  • Request for gym hours to start at 9:00 am on weekends (Pres. Nath)
  • Request for labeling nuts in food (Sen. Moore)
  • Request for earlier hours in the library on weekdays (Sen. Millett)

Week of November 5th: 

  • Rudeness from the Commons workers (Sen. Dekker)
  • No lock on 1st girls bathroom stall in the Commons near the Bon App Office (Sen. Millett)
  • Request for more microwaves on campus (Sen. Krigger)
  • Positive feedback from Hall-oween (Sen. Mitchell)
  • Re-evaluate how PSafe gives out parking passes- not enough parking spots available for the number of passes given (VP Gallagher)

 

October 2018

Week of October 29th: 

  • Meeting with Jim Ravelli on Wednesday at 9:00 am in front of Franz to discuss bathrooms in Franz & mold in Shiley (Speaker Boos)
  • Complaints that UP is not ADA accessible – some students can’t see out of mirrors in bathrooms (Sen. Taylor)
  • A student faced threats of getting his scholarship taken away for wanting to testify for students about ADA restrictions & mental health (Sen. Taylor)
  • ADvantage: problems communicating, no accessible office hours, lack of clarity of the role (Sen. Taylor)
  • Request for more microwaves on campus & coffee in the library (Sen. Krigger)
  • No multiracial option on University job applications (Sen. Musquiz)
  • Wifi connection problems on campus, especially in Romanaggi (Sen. Anderson)
  • Faulty wifi in Franz basement too (Dir. Burks)
  • Registration confusion: unclear if certain classes are offered in future semesters (Sen. Kasper)
  • Complaints about staff in the Commons – do something to boost their mood (Sen. Millett)
  • Complaint that off-campus students can’t access dorms (Sen. O’Connell)
  • Students were made uncomfortable by materials from the Voice for Life club outside the library (Sen. Taylor)
  • Heard good things/support for Voice for Life too (Speaker Boos)
  • First stall in first floor men’s bathroom in BC doesn’t have a lock (Sen. Papoutsakis)
  • All of my nursing students were having issues submitting 3-year scheduling on DegreeWorks (Sen. Dekker)
  • Students expressed both concerns (6 students) and support (4 students) of the Voice for Life tabling (Pres. Nath)
  • Student appreciated Land Acknowledgements (acknowledging the land that UP occupies, which was originally occupied by a native tribe) in the Diversity Center & at Step UP to Lead. Could include them in classrooms (Pres. Nath)
  • Complaints from East Quad about walking through the mulch path from construction (Sen. Paumier)
  • Flooding in Christie basement and some leaks in rooms (Sen.  Paumier)
  • Ketchup on the Shipstad stairwell not cleaned for a month (Sen. Moore)

Week of October 22nd: 

  • Not a well-maintained system with ketchup in the Pilot House (Senator Taylor)
  • The water-bottle filling station filters are all green now (Senator Dekker)
  • A bathroom in Shiley has a mold or fungus (Senator Taylor)
  • The number of outlets on the side of St. Mary’s near the main entrance has dropped – no power strips put in (VP Gallagher)

Week of October 8th:

  • Sprinklers on during the day & when it’s raining (Senator Owen)
  • Poor usability, approachability, & aesthetic of St Mary’s (Senator Owen)
  • Praise for CPB about the dance and calm evacuation (Senator Owen)
  • Student complaints about paying for laundry in the dorms (Senator Owen)
  • Small stall in men’s restroom on 1st floor of BC has no lock (Senator Taylor)
  • Reports from female students- feeling uncomfortable, inappropriate commons from workers in the commons near coffee stand (Senator Taylor)
  • Coats from the dance were in the office at PSafe and students were able to go through the pile (VP Gallagher)
  • Student got an eco-tainer and the lid didn’t fit (Senator Dekker)
  • Freshmen during Orientation felt the gap between students & student athletes when they wore their jerseys, not hall shirts (Senator Dekker)
  • Students didn’t know where to pick up their coats after the dance (Senator Millett)
  • Have the library open earlier- before 7:00 am (Senator Millett)
  • Praise for CPB- calm evacuation and getting home safely (Senator Krigger)
  • Report about sprinklers being on in front of Chiles at night and watering the sidewalks, not grass (Senator Krigger)
  • Shiley 301 clock is behind a few minutes (Senator Krigger)
  • Students want to know why the dance wasn’t held in Chiles where we could better control the situation (Senator Paumier)

Changing to a Smart Lock System- manageable via phone. Only the Quad is on the system so far (cost $4,000). Estimate: 15 years for the whole campus ($10,000-$15,000/year). Water use is down 40% from last year and 22% per year on average (Senator Taylor)
  • Follow-up on constituency report – Spoke with Becca and next year’s StepUP to Lead will have invitations for residence halls (Vice President Gallagher)
